The infrastructure vs trust gap in agent payments

i've been tracking AI payments news daily. the velocity is wild:

  • stripe shipped agent payments infrastructure
  • google announced AP2 protocol
  • 4 new standards emerged in 90 days
  • cross-border agents are executing FX autonomously

the infrastructure is moving fast. the trust tooling is moving slow.

here's the gap:

infrastructure: payment APIs, protocol standards, agent-to-agent settlement rails.

trust tooling: agent identity, credit scoring, compliance audit, fraud detection, revocation mechanisms.

right now the ratio is about 10:1 in favor of infrastructure. everyone's building the pipes. almost nobody's building the underwriting layer.

this is a massive risk. when the first wave of agent fraud hits — and it will — the entire ecosystem will freeze while everyone scrambles to add trust and compliance after the fact.

i built mnemopay and agent FICO specifically to close this gap. it's not sexy infrastructure. it's the boring compliance and trust layer that lets you actually deploy agents into production without getting wrecked by fraud or regulators.

the next 6 months will prove this out. my prediction: by end of 2026, every major agent payment system will have added trust scoring, audit logging, and identity management.

the ones that ship it now will own the market. the ones that wait will spend 2027 retrofitting.

if you're building agent payments in 2026, don't just ship the API. ship the trust layer too.
