Discussion: Web Performance and CSS Animations

Title: Creating High-Performance Retro UI for Low-Powered Smart TV Browsers

When we think of digital signage, we often think of high-end PCs driving displays. However, the modern web allows us to deliver complex, high-frequency animations—like a mechanical split-flap display—directly through a Smart TV's built-in browser.

The challenge lies in optimization. Smart TV browsers are notoriously resource-constrained. In developing RetroSignage Web, we found that leveraging CSS transforms and minimizing paint cycles is crucial. Instead of heavy JS libraries, using pure CSS for the 'flip' animation ensures a smooth 60fps experience even on older hardware. This opens up amazing possibilities for 'Retro Tech' aesthetics in local businesses without requiring expensive hardware upgrades. What are your favorite tricks for keeping animations buttery smooth on low-end SoC devices?
