AI SEO tools in 2026: pick the job first, then the price

Ask for a list of AI SEO tools in 2026 and you get a page that quietly mixes three unrelated purchases. One product sells keyword and backlink research. A second grades your draft against the pages currently ranking. A third watches whether ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews mention your brand at all. Buy the wrong one and you are paying monthly for a dashboard you never open.

This is the order I use to sort them, the five products small businesses actually run (Semrush, Ahrefs, Surfer, Frase, Clearscope), and the sequence I would buy them in when the budget is small. Prices below are vendor list prices checked in September 2026; this category reprices often, so confirm on the official pricing page before you commit.

Three jobs, not one product

Research. The classic SEO software set - keyword volumes, competitor backlinks, content gaps and rank tracking - now with AI suggestions layered on the same databases it always had.

Content optimisation. The tool reads your draft against whatever is ranking right now, then tells you which terms, questions and headings are missing. Most of them will also rewrite sections for you with AI.

AI visibility tracking, also called GEO. The newest job, and the one that trips people up: reporting whether your pages appear inside AI-generated answers, and which competitor got cited in your place.

A business that needs content optimisation does not need a backlink database, and a brand that lives inside AI answers does not need another keyword tool. Separate the jobs first and the shortlist falls out on its own.

Why AI visibility became its own line item

An Ahrefs study covering 863,000 search results and 4 million AI Overview URLs, published in March 2026, found that only about 38% of AI Overview citations come from the classic top-10 organic results, down from roughly 76% in July 2025.

Read that twice, because it changes what "ranking" means. A page sitting at position 15 is not out of the running any more; it is simply invisible to a rank tracker. That gap is the whole reason a separate software category exists, and why you should decide whether you care about it before you compare prices.

The five tools side by side

Tool Free tier (2026) Paid from Best for
Semrush Free plan: 1 demo project, 10 reports a day $117.33/mo billed annually One subscription covering research, rank tracking and AI visibility
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for verified sites $29/mo (new Starter tier) Backlink and keyword data on a budget
Surfer No public free tier ~49 EUR/mo on yearly billing Optimising one page against the live SERP
Frase 7-day trial, no card $39/mo on yearly billing An always-on AI-search content workflow
Clearscope 14-day trial $129/mo (Essentials) Prompt tracking for a team, with unlimited seats

Semrush: the suite that folded AI visibility into the standard plan

Semrush still packs keyword research, competitor analysis, site audit, rank tracking and backlinks into one subscription, and in 2026 it renamed its tiers "SEO & AI Search Plans" - a fair signal that AI reporting is now expected rather than optional. The SEO plan at $117.33/month billed annually (list price $139/month monthly) covers up to 5 websites, 500 tracked keywords a day, position tracking, site audit, AI visibility reports for any domain, AI sentiment analysis and custom AI prompts.

If you need heavy AI-search monitoring the tiers above add MCP access, more tracked prompts per day and AI brand performance for a single domain at $199/month ($165.17 annual), then Pro+ at $299/month ($248.17 annual) with 15 websites and 100 prompts a day, up to Advanced at $549/month ($455.67 annual) with 40 websites and API access. The free plan gives one demo project and 10 reports a day, which is genuinely enough to judge the interface.

The catch: a solo blogger will never use the upper half, and multi-brand prompt tracking pushes you off the cheapest tier.

Ahrefs: the data leader finally has a cheap door

Ahrefs holds the deepest backlink index in the industry, and the 2026 news that matters for small businesses is a Starter plan at $29/month. Plenty of older articles still quote "from $129" - that figure is stale. Starter gives you the essential keyword and site data for one project. Above it sit Lite at $129/month, Standard at $249/month (adding Content Explorer, Batch Analysis, Brand Radar and broken-link checks), Advanced at $449/month and Enterprise at $1,499/month.

AI features are sold apart from the core plans: Brand Radar AI prompt packages run $50, $100 or $250/month, Content Kit starts at $99/month, and Project Boost Pro is $20/month per project. So if AI-search monitoring is your main need, Ahrefs ends up more expensive than a Semrush SEO plan - its strength is research data, not content workflow.

Surfer: per-page optimisation against the live SERP

Surfer takes a draft and scores it against the pages ranking for that keyword, suggesting terms, questions, headings and structure; its assistant rewrites inside the editor, and the suite now bundles an AI Detector and a Humanizer. It tracks AI prompts too, but the meaningful tracking starts on the mid tier at roughly 99 EUR/month yearly with 25 prompts a week, Brand Knowledge and rank-drop detection.

Entry pricing is around 49 EUR/month yearly for draft and content optimisation with 10 tracked pages; the top scale tier is about 299 EUR/month with API access and 100 tracked AI prompts. Surfer bills in EUR from its European entity, so comparison sites quoting $49 or $99 are approximations. There is no documented free tier.

The catch: Surfer has no serious backlink or rank database of its own, so most teams pair it with Ahrefs or Semrush. It is a content tool, not a research tool.

Frase: a content workflow with auto-republish

Frase spent 2026 repositioning from a content-optimisation add-on into a "content operating system for AI search", and dropped its old Solo, Basic and Team tiers - the $15 to $115 structure you still see in older reviews no longer exists. Starter is $39/month billed yearly ($49 month-to-month) with 1 seat, 1 site, 10 articles and 50 audit pages a month, one-click publishing to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity, Wix and FraseCMS, SEO and GEO scores, AI visibility tracking in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, and Content Guard on 10 pages.

Content Guard is the feature worth the subscription: when a published page drops out of AI answers, it rewrites and republishes automatically. Professional at $103/month yearly adds 3 seats, 5 sites, 40 articles and 250 audit pages, a content calendar with internal-linking suggestions and Perplexity visibility; Scale at $239/month yearly covers 5 seats, 10 domains, 100 articles and Claude plus Gemini visibility. There is a 7-day trial with no card.

The catch: visibility tracking arrives on the cheapest plan, which is unusual, but Frase is not a keyword or backlink database and its article limits get tight once you publish weekly.

Clearscope: prompt tracking with unlimited seats

Clearscope made its name on content briefs, and its 2026 pitch is built around Tracked Prompts: 50 a month on Essentials at $129/month. You hand it the questions your customers type into ChatGPT or AI Overviews and it reports where your content appears, with page-level detail. Essentials also includes 50 pages, 20 topic explorations and 20 drafts a month, plus unlimited users and projects.

That last part matters more than it looks. A 5-person agency pays one Essentials fee; per-seat tools multiply by five. Business at $399/month lifts the limits to 300 tracked prompts and 300 pages with a dedicated account manager, and Enterprise is custom. Extra pages cost $25/month per 100, extra drafts $50 per block. A 14-day trial is available.

The catch: at $129/month per site it is priced for businesses that take content seriously, and like Frase it offers no backlink research.

The order I would buy them

  • You need research data only. Ahrefs Starter at $29/month. Add Brand Radar AI at $50/month or more only when AI tracking becomes a real need.
  • You want one subscription and AI reports included. Semrush SEO at $117.33/month annual; most small businesses never need to leave this tier.
  • Your rankings come from on-page relevance. Surfer from 49 EUR/month, paired with a research tool you already pay for.
  • You publish constantly and want the workflow automated. Frase Starter at $39/month; Content Guard's rewrite-and-republish is unique at that price.
  • You are a team that refuses per-seat pricing. Clearscope Essentials at $129/month with unlimited users.
  • You have no budget yet. Keysearch sits at a historic $17 to $24/month for solo bloggers, though its pricing page was erroring during our September 2026 check, and Screaming Frog's crawler is free up to 500 URLs - still the cheapest way to find broken pages and thin content before any AI tool spends tokens on them.

Running this stack from Vietnam

None of the five is region-locked: they are cloud subscriptions billed in USD or EUR with no local datacenter advantage to chase, because latency does not matter for this work. For an SME in Vietnam the sensible entry is the free tiers - Semrush Free, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, the Frase trial and the Clearscope trial - with Surfer the only one lacking a public free plan. A first paid month is best spent on Ahrefs Starter for research plus one content tool still on trial, and prompt tracking only once you have pages worth tracking.

Vietnamese-language AI search is early but no longer hypothetical: Google AI Overviews has expanded to Vietnamese queries, so well-structured Vietnamese content is already being cited. The fundamentals have not changed - original data, real prices and named sources earn citations whether the reader is a person or a language model.

What to check before you pay

  • Does AI visibility sit inside the plan you are buying, or is it an add-on?
  • Is the seat count per user or unlimited?
  • What happens when you exceed the article or page quota - hard stop or overage charge?
  • Is API access included, or reserved for enterprise tiers?

FAQ

Which single AI SEO tool covers the most ground for a small business?
Semrush SEO at $117.33/month billed annually, because research, rank tracking and AI visibility reports arrive in one plan. If backlink and keyword data is your real need, Ahrefs Starter at $29/month is the better value.

Can I use any of this for free?
At the entry level, yes. Semrush Free gives one demo project and 10 reports a day, Ahrefs offers Webmaster Tools to verified sites, and Frase and Clearscope both run no-card trials of 7 and 14 days. Free tiers are enough to evaluate an interface; ongoing prompt tracking is not free.

How much content should I have before paying for prompt tracking?
Buy it when your pages already rank or earn traffic, and when being cited in ChatGPT or AI Overviews is something customers actually do. For most small businesses that point arrives somewhere after 30 published pages. Before that you are paying for an empty dashboard.

Do these tools work for Vietnamese keywords?
They do - all five are cloud SaaS with no regional restriction and international card billing. Start on the free tiers for your Vietnamese keywords, and note that AI Overviews already answers Vietnamese queries, so structured Vietnamese content is being cited today.
