GhostTerm AI: A Spooky Terminal Powered by Gemma

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine

What I Built

GhostTerm AI is a spooky, retro-style AI terminal powered by Gemma.

Inspired by the Ghost in the Machine theme, I wanted to create an experience that feels like communicating with a mysterious intelligence hiding inside an old computer terminal.

The project features a retro CRT-inspired interface with glowing text, spooky visual effects, sound, and interactive commands.

Users can try commands like help, summon, story, about, and why-open-ai to explore the terminal and interact with the AI.

My goal was to combine the mysterious atmosphere of an old terminal with the possibilities of modern AI and open-weight models.

How I Built It

I built GhostTerm AI using Google AI Studio and a React + TypeScript frontend with Vite.

The project uses Google's Gemma model for AI-powered interactions and features a retro terminal interface with spooky visual effects, interactive commands, and sound.

I used GitHub to manage the source code and Netlify to deploy the live application.

Building this project helped me explore how AI, frontend development, and creative design can come together to create an interactive experience.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation matters because it gives developers and students more freedom to experiment, learn, and build creative AI-powered applications.

Open-weight models like Gemma make it possible to explore AI beyond simply using a closed API. Developers can study model options, experiment with customization, and explore self-hosting or local inference when their setup supports it.

For GhostTerm AI, Gemma helped me explore how an AI model could become part of a creative, interactive experience instead of just a regular chatbot.

As a student and developer, I believe open innovation makes AI experimentation more accessible and encourages people to turn their ideas into real projects.

The Spirit of It

What if an old computer terminal wasn't really empty?

What if something was waiting on the other side of that blinking cursor?

That thought inspired GhostTerm AI.

I wanted to recreate the mysterious feeling of an old terminal with glowing text, strange commands, and the possibility of an unexpected answer.

By combining this atmosphere with AI, I turned that little spooky idea into a working project.

Type a command. Ask a question. See what answers.
