SellSmart AI: Helping Small Businesses Create Product Listings with Open-Weight AI

Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle Submission 💸

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle

What I Built

SellSmart AI — AI-powered product listing generator for small businesses.

Small business owners, handmade artists, and online sellers often spend a lot of time writing product descriptions and promotional content. SellSmart AI aims to make this process faster and easier.

Users can enter their product details, including the product name, category, price, key features, target customers, preferred tone, and language.

The app is designed to generate:

  • Professional product titles and descriptions
  • Five key selling points
  • SEO keywords
  • Instagram and WhatsApp promotional captions

The goal is to help small sellers save time and create attractive content for their products without needing professional copywriting skills.

How I Built It

I used Google AI Studio to build SellSmart AI, with a focus on using Gemma, Google's open-weight model family, for AI-powered product content generation.

The application includes a product details form, a generated listing interface, and options to edit and copy the generated content.

I focused on building a simple and user-friendly experience for small sellers instead of creating another general-purpose chatbot.

During deployment to Netlify, I encountered an issue with the AI-generation request returning an unexpected response format. I am working on validating the hosted generation workflow and making the deployed experience reliable.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Small businesses need AI tools that are accessible, flexible, and affordable.

Open-weight models such as Gemma offer developers more flexibility in how AI can be deployed, customized, and adapted to specific use cases. Depending on the deployment method, developers may also have greater control over data handling and infrastructure costs.

For SellSmart AI, this flexibility matters because small sellers should have access to useful AI tools without needing complicated or expensive software.

Building with open-weight AI also creates opportunities to experiment with different deployment options, improve prompts for niche products, and adapt the application based on real customer feedback.

My next goal is to test the application with small business owners, learn which features are most useful, and explore a sustainable pricing model.
