GitHub Arctic Code Vault

While going through my GitHub profile I saw this today. A Highlights section has been appeared with a tag Arctic Code Vault Contributor.

What is Arctic Code Vault?

  • Svalbard is an archipelago in the town of Longyearbyen near the Arctic circle.
  • It contains a Seed Vault which contains seeds and have been stored there for saving the diversity of plant genes.
  • So GitHub has set up a similar kind of vault for open-source projects and chose the projects/repository which have been public before 2nd February 2020.
  • The open-source projects have been stored on silver halide films which is claimed to store it fore next 1000 years.

I glad to be a part of it!

To us? None, likely.

I think this is being intentionally preserved as an artifact of our time and culture as a practical example to future archaeology efforts.

Well Svalbard is not a town, it’s an archipelago. The seed vault is located near the „town“ Longyearbyen. I lived there for 5 years ;) and I’ve been inside the seed vault.
Also it’s far north of the Arctic Circle at 78 degrees north.
