In-house IT hire vs managed IT services company — which did you go with and why?

We're at about 25 staff now and IT is basically being handled by whoever's least busy that week, which obviously isn't sustainable. Trying to decide between hiring a dedicated IT person or going with a managed services company. Would love to hear real experiences, not just "it depends" (I know it depends, just want to hear how other people actually decided).
