Apple plans to launch Apple Intelligence, its set of AI features for iPhone, in mainland China in December 2026 with the iOS 27.3 update, Bloomberg reported on October 14. The China version will run on Alibaba's AI models instead of the Google Gemini models Apple uses in the West. It matters because Apple's AI features have been missing from iPhones in China for about two years of regulatory delay.

Apple has not announced the plan. Every detail below comes from reporting that cites Bloomberg, and the outlets differ on some of them.

What is reportedly coming

TechNode and GSMArena say the China version uses two Alibaba models. Qwen is Alibaba's family of language models. Tongyi Wanxiang is its image model, which GSMArena says handles image editing. TechNode adds that Baidu, the Chinese search company, is working with Apple on search and Siri-related functions.

The reports do not fully agree on which features ship first:

Feature TechNode MacTrast GSMArena
Writing tools Included Limited text tools Text generation restricted in some apps
Notification summaries Included Not stated Not stated
Genmoji Included Newer version excluded Not stated
Clean Up photo editing Included Basic photo editing included Image editing included
Image Playground Excluded Excluded Excluded
Redesigned Siri AI Excluded Excluded Excluded

All three agree on the two biggest gaps: no new Siri and no Image Playground. GSMArena says Image Playground is blocked by local law.

Why it took so long

China tightly restricts foreign AI services, so Apple had to partner with local companies and win government approval. MacTrast says Apple got initial clearance in July 2026. Citing the South China Morning Post, it adds that China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has granted network access permits for Alibaba's Qwen and Tongyi Wanxiang models.

TechNode reports that Apple received permits for recent iPhones to support Apple Intelligence and the Alibaba models. The sources give different dates for these permits, so the exact timeline is unclear.

The approvals do not end there. MacTrast says Apple still needs clearance for the consumer launch and will need approval again for future updates to the AI models.

The Alibaba link

The deal would put Alibaba's Qwen models inside iPhones sold in China. Qwen already powers Alibaba's own hardware: the company began selling its Qwen N1 AI glasses in China on October 13.

What this means for developers

For app makers with Chinese users, December is the date to plan around. Apple Intelligence features such as writing tools and notification summaries can change how users read and reply in your app. Test your app on iOS 27.3 as soon as a test version is available.

Do not assume feature parity. If your app relies on Siri AI or Image Playground in other markets, plan a fallback for China, since both are reported to be missing.

Expect differences in output. The same feature may behave differently when it runs on Alibaba's models instead of Gemini. Teams that support text features in several regions should test writing tools and summaries in Chinese specifically.

Watch for Apple's own confirmation. Until Apple announces the launch, the date, feature list and partner roles are reports, not commitments, and approvals could still shift them.
