I Just Got Back from China — Here's What Actually Works for Internet Access in 2026

Every "best VPN for China" article is written by someone who hasn't been there recently. The Great Firewall changes constantly, and what worked 6 months ago might be completely blocked today.

I'm writing this based on a recent trip and a thread with 59 comments from other travelers sharing real-time experiences.

The Reality Check

Here's what most guides won't tell you:

  • Free VPNs don't work in China. Period. The GFW specifically targets free VPN protocols.
  • Some paid VPNs don't work either. Standard OpenVPN and WireGuard protocols are detected and blocked.
  • You MUST set up before you land. You cannot download VPN apps from inside China — the App Store and Play Store are restricted.

What Actually Worked

Based on my experience and the 59-comment thread:

NordVPN with obfuscated servers was the most consistent option. Here's the setup:

  1. Download and install before your flight
  2. Log in and test the connection
  3. Enable "Obfuscated Servers" in settings
  4. Pre-select 3-4 servers (Japan, Singapore, US West Coast)
  5. Turn on auto-connect

What worked through the firewall:

  • WhatsApp ✅
  • Google (Search, Maps, Gmail) ✅
  • YouTube ✅ (some buffering on HD)
  • Instagram ✅
  • Twitter/X ✅

Speed: Good enough for video calls on WiFi. Streaming was fine at 720p, occasionally buffered at 1080p.

The eSIM Alternative

Some travelers in the thread mentioned using a travel eSIM (like Airalo) that routes through a non-Chinese carrier. This works but:

  • Uses mobile data (expensive for heavy use)
  • Doesn't help when you're on hotel WiFi
  • Can be slower than VPN on a good WiFi connection

My approach: NordVPN on WiFi + eSIM as backup for when WiFi is unreliable.

Setup Checklist (Do This Before Your Flight)

  • [ ] Download NordVPN on all devices
  • [ ] Log in and verify your subscription is active
  • [ ] Enable obfuscated servers
  • [ ] Test connect to 3 different server locations
  • [ ] Download offline maps (Google Maps → download region)
  • [ ] Save important emails/docs offline
  • [ ] Tell your bank you're traveling (avoid card blocks)

Common Mistakes

  1. Waiting until you arrive — you can't download anything once you're there
  2. Only having one VPN — if your primary gets blocked, you need a backup
  3. Not testing before the trip — some servers work better than others for China
  4. Forgetting to enable obfuscation — standard protocols are instantly detected

Bottom Line

NordVPN with obfuscated servers is the most reliable option I've found for China in 2026. Set it up before you go, pre-select your servers, and you'll have consistent access to everything you need.
