This was a closer call three years ago. In 2026, it's not.
NordVPN wins on speed, wins on price, and has a stronger documented privacy track record. ExpressVPN has better router support and slightly more polished mobile apps. That's about it.
If you want me to justify reading further: I've used both for extended periods, I understand the arguments for ExpressVPN, and I'm going to give those arguments their due before explaining why they don't change the conclusion.
Speed: NordVPN Wins
The turning point was NordLynx.
When NordVPN launched NordLynx — their WireGuard-based protocol — it reset the speed benchmarks. WireGuard is architecturally faster than the OpenVPN and IKEv2 protocols that dominated before it. NordVPN's implementation added a double NAT system to preserve privacy while keeping WireGuard's speed.

Router app. ExpressVPN has the best native router app in the VPN space. What ExpressVPN Has Been Saying Lately
ExpressVPN has pushed back on the speed narrative, highlighting their Lightway protocol improvements and pointing to specific tests where they outperform NordLynx. Those tests exist. In some locations and on some connection types, Lightway beats NordLynx.
The problem is consistency. On average, across many tests and many locations, NordLynx leads. ExpressVPN wins in specific scenarios; NordVPN wins more consistently. And NordVPN does it at a lower price.
If ExpressVPN dropped their annual price to $60-70/year to match NordVPN's effective per-year cost, the comparison would be closer. At current pricing, the case is hard.
The Verdict
For most users: NordVPN.
Faster speeds, better long-term pricing, and a privacy track record that's at least as good as ExpressVPN's. The 2-year plan at ~$3.39/month is excellent value for a premium VPN.
