The 1-2-3 Method: Preparing for SDE-2/3 Roles Alongside a 9-5

Core Insight

You don't need extra time — you need a better system. Long hours, deadlines, and meetings don't have to block prep if the structure is right.

1️⃣ One Pattern at a Time

  • Instead of scattered, random practice, focus on 1 DSA pattern per week.
  • Pair it with 1 System Design case study every weekend.
  • Depth > breadth: mastering a pattern (e.g., sliding window, two pointers, topological sort) generalizes to dozens of problems, instead of grinding random questions.

Weekly cadence example:
| Day | Focus |
|-----|-------|
| Mon-Fri | 1 DSA pattern, ~2 hrs/day (theory + 3-5 problems) |
| Sat | System design case study (read/design + notes) |
| Sun | Mock interview + review weak spots |

2️⃣ Two Hours of Consistency

  • 2 focused hours daily beat 6 distracted hours crammed into a Sunday.
  • Small, steady progress compounds — same principle as spaced repetition and incremental system building.
  • Protect this block like a meeting: no phone, single task, timer-boxed.

Tips to protect the 2 hours:

  • Block it on your calendar like a work meeting.
  • Do it early morning or right after work before energy drops.
  • Track streaks (not just problems solved) to stay motivated.

3️⃣ Three Mock Interviews for Better Communication

  • Sit in mock interviews every weekend — coding + system design + behavioral.
  • Advanced SDE interviews (SDE-2/3) test trade-offs and clarity of thought, not just correctness.
  • Behavioral rounds matter as much as coding speed — practice articulating decisions out loud.

What to rotate across mocks:

  1. DSA mock — focus on communicating approach before coding.
  2. System design mock — focus on trade-off discussions (consistency vs availability, SQL vs NoSQL, etc.).
  3. Behavioral mock — STAR-format stories, leadership/conflict scenarios.

Why This Works

  • Removes the "no time" excuse by fitting prep into a realistic daily/weekly rhythm instead of requiring large uninterrupted blocks.
  • Builds compounding skill (patterns) + compounding habit (consistency) + compounding confidence (mock reps).
  • Balances technical depth (DSA/System Design) with communication (mocks), which is what actually gets evaluated at SDE-2/3 bar-raiser rounds.

Personal Action Plan (fill in)

  • [ ] Pick this week's DSA pattern: ___________
  • [ ] Pick this weekend's system design case: ___________
  • [ ] Schedule daily 2-hour block: ___________ (time of day)
  • [ ] Schedule 3 mocks for the weekend: DSA / System Design / Behavioral
