Apple Smart Glasses Release Date: What the Latest Reports Say

Apple is reportedly targeting late 2027 for its first Apple smart glasses, according to recent reporting, as the company explores a wearable product designed around cameras, audio and artificial intelligence rather than the full augmented-reality experience of Vision Pro.

The reported timing comes as AI glasses are moving rapidly into the mainstream. Recent reporting citing Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says Apple is aiming for a late-2027 release and that the initial product could be introduced without an augmented-reality display.

A different direction from Vision Pro

The reported product would occupy a much smaller category than Apple's Vision Pro headset. Instead of surrounding the user's vision with digital content, the glasses would use cameras and microphones to understand the environment while speakers provide audio feedback.

The design would allow the glasses to handle tasks that normally require pulling out a phone: taking pictures, making calls, listening to music and interacting with an AI assistant. The iPhone would remain an important part of the system, with the glasses relying on Apple's wider hardware and software ecosystem for much of their processing and connectivity.

Siri could become the main interface

Artificial intelligence is central to the reported concept. Apple has been rebuilding Siri around more capable contextual systems, and the glasses could give that assistant a more useful physical interface because cameras would allow the system to interpret what the wearer is seeing.

That could make the product less about displaying information directly in front of the user's eyes and more about providing hands-free access to Apple's services. The absence of a display would also avoid some of the weight, battery and optical complexity associated with a true AR headset.

The market is changing before Apple arrives

The timing is significant because camera-and-audio AI glasses are already expanding. Counterpoint Research data cited in recent coverage showed worldwide AI-glasses shipments rising sharply in the first half of 2026, while display-less products accounted for the overwhelming majority of shipments.

That gives Apple an established category to enter rather than forcing it to create an entirely new market. It also raises a different set of challenges, particularly privacy, battery life and the usefulness of AI when the device has no conventional screen.

Privacy will be part of the product challenge

Camera-equipped glasses create a problem that does not exist in the same way with ordinary headphones or smartwatches. People around the wearer can potentially be recorded without knowing it, making recording indicators, user controls and clear privacy rules important parts of any launch.

That issue is becoming more visible as other companies expand AI glasses. Recent reporting has highlighted public concern around cameras, data handling and the use of recorded footage, giving Apple a reason to approach the category carefully rather than simply copying existing products.

The reported decision to avoid a full display could also make Apple's first generation easier to build. A display requires additional optics, power and processing, while an audio-and-camera device can remain closer to the size and weight of conventional eyewear.

Apple has not officially announced the product, so the late-2027 timing and reported hardware should not be treated as final specifications. For now, Apple smart glasses remain a development project reported by industry sources, with the rumored late-2027 launch offering the clearest indication yet of where the company may be heading.
