Fortnite Player Counts Surge as Treasure Hunters Season Launches

Fortnite’s Treasure Hunters mini-season, launched November 1, has lifted player numbers sharply, with Battle Royale averaging four times its recent Sunday level, GameSpot reported November 2.

The season’s opening weekend brought a One Piece crossover, new abilities and a chest-based giveaway. GameSpot said the number of players rose further on Monday and that Fortnite Battle Royale appeared on course for its strongest month since the Fortnite OG mini-season in 2023. Those gains follow a difficult year for the game, the outlet wrote.

On launch day, Fortnite’s popularity also led to login queues. TheGamer reported that the game reached 4.5 million concurrent players, citing Fortnite bot data, and that queues peaked at 12 minutes. Shane the Gamer cited Fortnite insider HYPEX’s estimate of nearly five million concurrent players, while noting a separate tracker recorded more than 4.2 million connected players. The totals vary by tracker and measure, but the outlets described a major surge around the launch.

A rare chance at a free Item Shop

The Treasure Hunt gives players a chance to find cosmetics in chests, including an A$AP Rocky skin and a Mercedes SUV, GameSpot said. Its most valuable prize is the Pirate Shop token, which unlocks two separate 14-day periods in which players can claim items sold for V-Bucks in Fortnite’s Item Shop. One activation is for 2026 and the other for 2027, and the timer begins when a player activates each one.

The prize is shared with a player’s party if a squadmate finds it, according to TheGamer. It does not cover real-money offers, gifts or Battle Pass levels, and players can claim only one Sidekick they do not already own. Items claimed during an activation remain with the player after the free period ends, Shane the Gamer reported.

TheGamer said Epic had not announced the token’s drop odds. In an update, the outlet described a rate of roughly one token per 700,000 chests as a current belief, not a confirmed figure. The token’s rarity has not stopped players from opening chests in hopes of winning the shop access.

Gameplay changes accompany the giveaway

GameSpot’s Phil Owen argued that the giveaway is not the only reason the season is working. He said changes to Battle Royale have made it feel closer to earlier versions of Fortnite, after Chapter 7 introduced a rearranged interface, purchasable reboot cards and a faster time-to-kill. The shorter time-to-kill, in his assessment, made fights less forgiving.

Treasure Hunters removes purchasable reboot cards, which GameSpot said makes squads more likely to stay and fight rather than leave at the first sign of trouble. The season’s weapon pool also lacks weapons that, in Owen’s view, let average players easily hit opponents from long range. That gives players more opportunity to react to ambushes and survive them, he wrote.

The season brings back collectible sprites, but their abilities no longer make as much difference in fights. GameSpot contrasted that with earlier seasons, when players without powerful sprites could be disadvantaged, including in late matches. The new setup lets players who enjoy collecting sprites use them without making them essential to compete, the outlet said.

The One Piece crossover adds anime abilities, including Ace’s fire powers from the Flame-Flame Fruit and Zoro’s Three Swords. Owen described the abilities as a welcome addition, singling out Zoro’s weapon as an amusing melee option. The season also builds on Fortnite’s previously confirmed One Piece character lineup.

GameSpot said the changes could help retain some of the returning players into Chapter 8, but noted that Grand Theft Auto VI is due in a few weeks and may draw players away. Its assessment was that the Treasure Hunters mini-season offers a stronger reason to return than the free cosmetics alone.
