Launching Slate: A Simple Writing Tool

Why I Created Slate

Writing has changed a lot in recent years. Whether you're making notes for work, writing a blog post, or working on research, everyone needs a good place to write. But finding the right tool isn't always easy. Many writing apps are either too complicated or don't have the features you need.

Slate Editor

That's why I created Slate. This started as solving a personal problem for me to find a really good WYSIWYG Markdown Editor!

What is Slate?

Slate is a free writing tool that works on your browser. It helps you write better and faster, while keeping your work private and secure. It even stores all your notes on your browser, so you don't need to worry about your notes being stored on the internet.

What Makes Slate Special?

Your Privacy Comes First

Everything you write stays on your computer. You don't need to worry about your notes being stored on the internet, but you can still share your work when you want to.

Smart Writing Help

Slate includes helpful features that check your spelling, suggest improvements, and help you write clearer content.

Clean and Simple Design

I've made Slate easy to use, with a clean look that helps you focus on writing. There's no clutter - just you and your words.

Who Can Use Slate?

Writers and Bloggers

Write your posts with helpful spelling and grammar checks. Slate helps you make your writing clear and engaging.

Students and Researchers

Create Ill-organized papers and notes. Slate helps you structure your work and explain complex ideas clearly.

Work Teams

Write better documentation and keep your team's notes organized. Share when you need to, keep private when you don't.

Personal Note-Taking

Quickly write down your thoughts and ideas. Organize them easily!

Why Choose Slate?

Slate is different because it:

  • Keeps your writing private
  • Helps you write better
  • Is completely free

Looking Ahead

I built Slate to make writing easier for me and I think it could be helpful for you. It's just the beginning - I'll keep improving based on what you tell me you need.

There is a lot of potential here. Thank you for sharing.

May I suggest that a self-hosted version of Slate would go a long way to ensuring data privacy.

Interesting, the next feature I was planning to add was bring your own API key btw! Maybe integrating local models could be a later idea!

Question: would you be collaborating with your team when you self-host?

Self-hosting will be for personal use only, as I strongly lean towards privacy-preserving software solutions. That means local-first and open source software gets the nod around here, especially when developed/hosted on a public Git repository.

Allowing users to bring their own API key is a great plan, as would supporting local LLMs using Ollama.
