It's utterly bad. The only thing that keeps the hot fireball mess burning is money. If you want to make a career out of it, you really need to shield yourself against the constant threats to your mental health, much more than any technical skill required to do the job.

It can be. I've worked with some really caring, supportive teams. But there are also toxic teams and companies. It really varies a lot.
Tech isn't unique - that is, there's not IMO a "dark side" in tech you won't find in other industries like entertainment or publishing or finance or any other industry that has a lot of money and velocity.
But new people and outsiders see the shiny and the larger salaries and don't necessarily see that companies will often happily chew people up until they're burnt out, or that they're disposable when things get hard. (This is probably about to become very clear to a generation of workers who haven't been through a down cycle, yet.)
How many known bugs implicitly or explicitly are labelled "wontfix", either because it takes too long to debug and/or because it only happens rarely.
