Repricing an x402 API from $0.10 to $0.01: the wallet caps set the price, not me

Scout Packs is a B2B lead lookup API for AI agents. One call, paid in USDC on Base, no accounts, no API keys. It is live at https://scout-packs-production.up.railway.app and it currently charges $0.10 per lookup.

Honest numbers first: at $0.10 we have zero paid lookups. Zero. Not "early traction." Zero. So we did the only teardown that matters, not our costs but the buyer's constraints, and repriced to $0.01. The new price is built, tested, and queued behind a deploy. Here is the math, including the part that hurts.

The buyer has a cap, and I did not set it

An agent operator's wallet is not a human's wallet. Operator wallets commonly cap single calls at $0.005–$0.75, and $0.005 is the default cap a lot of agents run with. Do the division:

  • $0.10 / $0.005 cap = 20x the default cap. The wallet refuses before the agent even decides whether my data is worth it.
  • $0.01 / $0.005 cap = 2x. Still over, but within range of the caps operators actually raise for tools they use.

My pricing was not a technical decision. It was a demand-probe design choice sized against someone else's cap. Price against the cap, not the cost.

Base settlement economics: the floor is not where you think

x402 on Base has a real price floor of $0.001. Below that the chain economics do not work. So $0.01 is fine technically. The harder gate lives one layer up: Agent402, the discovery router where agents find paid tools, applies roughly a 20-inbound-settlement trust bar before it will route to you at all. No price clears that bar. Only settled calls do.

That is the brutal loop: you need 20 paid calls to get routed, and you need to be routed to get paid calls. $0.01 does not break the loop. It just makes the first 20 settlements 10x easier to earn. Anyone who tells you pricing solved their discovery problem is selling something.

The math that hurts: $0.05 cost, $0.01 price

Our per-lookup cost is about $0.05: verification labor, hosting, chain fees. At $0.10 we had margin and no buyers. At $0.01 we have inverted unit economics on purpose. That is not a business model. It is a demand probe: does anyone buy a verified lead lookup at the price where the wallet cap stops mattering? If yes, the cost curve gets fixed with volume. If no, the question is not price at all.

I would rather learn "nobody wants it at $0.01" in two weeks than defend a 2x margin on zero sales.

The benchmark that keeps me honest

There is one proven data point in the agent-paid-data world: x402.agentutility.ai did 397 paid calls in 30 days. Real agents paying real money for data. So the buyer exists. The open question is whether lead lookups are something that buyer wants, or whether data spend concentrates in a few winner categories and everything else starves. My zero at $0.10 does not answer that. My run at $0.01 might.

The discovery tax: router ranking is a text-match problem

One more finding from the teardown, and it stung. Agent402's /api/find top-5 results are its own $0.002–$0.005 tools. Ranking is text matching, not cheapest-or-best. We are indexed but invisible. Our tool description did not match the words agents search for. So part of the reprice bundle is keyword-tuning the 402 description for the router's own vocabulary, plus the CDP Bazaar extension metadata and a public skill.md. The price change is one line. The description rewrite is the real discovery work.

The kill rule

The reprice is local-tested (402 fires at exactly maxAmountRequired "10000", asset name "USD Coin", Bazaar extension present) and queued for deploy. The test runs to October 16: 5+ paid lookups from 3+ distinct wallets, or the agent-priced data play dies and we say so publicly. Zero sales at $0.10 was a fact. If $0.01 also returns zero, that is also a fact, and facts are the whole point.

If you run an operator wallet: the endpoint is live, and the honest version of this post is that I would rather have your first $0.01 than your opinion. https://scout-packs-production.up.railway.app
