How I Built ShotVu: An AI-Powered Screen Recording Tool for Async Teams

Like many developers, I found myself stuck in back-to-back meetings and repeating the same explanations multiple times. I wanted a better way to share knowledge — one that didn’t require everyone to be online at the same time.

That’s when I started building ShotVu
.

Why Screen Recording?

Screen recording solves a simple but powerful problem:

Explain something once, share it with anyone.

Cut down meetings.

Build a reusable knowledge base.

But I realized recording alone isn’t enough. A good async communication tool should feel human and time-saving.

Adding AI to the Mix

To improve the experience, I built two key features:

AI Eyes on Camera 👀
Most people don’t look at the lens — they look at their screen. This breaks eye contact and feels awkward on video. ShotVu’s AI Eyes on Camera subtly corrects your gaze, so it feels like you’re speaking directly to your audience.

AI Notes 📝
Nobody wants to rewatch a 40-minute recording to get the main points. With AI Notes, every recording automatically generates summaries and action items so your team can get the highlights instantly.

Why It Matters

Work is shifting toward async-first collaboration. Tools like ShotVu are built to save time, cut down meetings, and make video communication more effective:

Screen recording when you don’t need another meeting.

AI Eyes on Camera to appear more confident and engaging.

AI Notes so no one has to rewatch full recordings.

I’d love feedback from the Dev.to community. What’s the biggest friction you face when using screen recording tools?s
