Cheap AI token platforms need separate balance semantics
Cheap AI model access gets messy when every route looks like the same wallet.
A platform may support official direct routes, lower-cost routed channels, backup providers, subscription-backed pools, and heavier agent workflows. Those can all be useful. The problem starts when users cannot tell which balance will pay for which request.
A clear AI token product should separate the balance story before the request runs:
- selected model
- upstream model actually called
- official direct route or lower-cost routed route
- balance bucket that will be charged
- input and output price for that route
- API key or project allowed to use it
- primary channel and backup channel
- retry or fallback behavior
- failed-request charge policy
- final usage receipt
- matching wallet ledger entry
This matters because users are not only buying a model name. They are buying predictable access.
If an official route uses one credit balance and a discount route uses another routed balance, the UI and API receipts should say that plainly. A model catalog should not imply every model is paid the same way. A playground test should not hide whether the request used official Credit, a cheaper routed balance, or a fallback path.
The same rule applies after the request. Usage history should preserve the selected model, upstream model, route, token counts, applied price, final charge, status, and ledger row. Otherwise a cheap token platform turns into a billing puzzle as soon as a team starts using it in production.
