Electroactive bacteria break that boundary

The formal term is extracellular electron transfer (EET), split into two directions: Electron donation—the cell pushes electrons out onto a mineral or electrode, effectively exhaling them, instead of onto oxygen. Bioluminescent bacteria emit light through a chemical reaction (luciferin-luciferase); electroactive bacteria move electrons through protein wiring.
