I replaced my copy-paste hours with AI agents — here's what actually worked

I build AI agents for a living now, but it started as self-defense: I was spending two hours a night on work that doesn't pay — scraping lead lists, digging through search results, editing blog drafts. So I built small agents to take the boring parts. Not "an AI that runs your business." One agent, one boring job.

Here's the honest breakdown of what works, what doesn't, and where I still do the work myself.

1. Lead research

The agent: you give it a customer profile (industry, size, region) and it builds a list of real companies with contact routes, each with its source attached.

What works: volume and structure. A 200-row list of candidate companies with sourced contact routes, in an hour, is real.

What doesn't: judgment. The agent finds candidates; it can't tell you which ones are worth your time. I still hand-pick. If a tool claims it "qualifies your leads," it's guessing.

2. Blog writing

The agent: drafts with actual research behind them — it reads sources before writing, so you don't get the generic listicle that could have been written in 2019.

What works: first drafts. Structure, coverage, citations in place.

What doesn't: voice. First drafts only. I still edit every piece before a client sees it — and if you skip that, readers can tell. The agent writes like a researcher; you have to make it write like you.

3. Web research

The agent: compiles a briefing on any topic with citations, so a 3-hour research session becomes a 15-minute review.

What works: breadth. "Everything published recently on X, summarized, with sources" is exactly what these models are good at.

What doesn't: anything behind logins or paywalls. The agent can't see what you can't see. It also can't judge which sources are junk — that's still you.

The pattern

None of this replaces a person. It replaces the copy-paste hours around the person. Every deliverable still gets human eyes before it goes out the door — because the failure modes are consistent: agents hallucinate confidence, they can't judge fit, and they don't have taste.

If you're trying this yourself, start with one job you dread. Not a "workflow." Not an "assistant." One job.

I run Torchfen — we build these agents for other people: one agent, one boring job, starting at $49 (Starter, Growth, Scale, or monthly retainer if you want us maintaining it). But everything above works just as well if you build it yourself — happy to answer questions in the comments about what's overhyped.

(No testimonials, no invented stats — this account is new and we haven't earned either yet.)
