Hack Viewer Attention with the Open Loop Hook

Your audience has the attention span of a goldfish on espresso. Give away the payoff in the first five seconds of your tech video, and they’re clicking away to watch someone else.

Enter the Open Loop Hook.

Rooted in basic human psychology, an open loop creates a curiosity gap. You drop a high-stakes tease at the very beginning of your script, intentionally leave it unresolved, and pivot into your main topic. Your viewer’s brain physically craves closure—forcing them to stay locked in to close the loop.

Here is the 3-step execution framework:

  1. The Drop: Reveal a wild result, hidden flaw, or high-stakes scenario.
  2. The Delay: Promise to solve or reveal it later in the video.
  3. The Pivot: Transition directly into your content setup.

Let’s translate this into real-world tech scripts:

Hardware Review Example:

"This $40 accessory doubled my M3 Mac’s export speeds, but if you buy the wrong version, it can actually fry your thunderbolt port. I’ll show you the exact model to avoid in a minute, but first, look at these benchmark numbers..."

Coding / Software Example:

"I let AI rewrite my startup's backend. It cut our server costs by 70%, except for one hidden line of code that almost leaked our entire database. Before I show you that fatal flaw, here’s how we set up the prompt..."

Notice the tension? The viewer isn't just watching a standard review or tutorial anymore. They need to know which model fries the port or which line of code broke the database.

The golden rule of open loops: Always close them. Teasing a secret and failing to deliver is cheap clickbait. Delivering on your promise builds trust, skyrockets your average view duration (AVD), and keeps your retention graphs flat.

Drop an open loop into your next intro and watch your retention jump.
