How to Hack Video Retention Using the Curiosity Loop

Viewer drop-off isn't caused by bad visuals or boring B-roll. It happens the exact second a viewer feels satisfied. Once their brain gets the answer it came for, they click away.

To stop the retention bleed, you need to master The Curiosity Loop.

It’s a psychological copywriting framework designed to keep viewers hooked by deliberately delaying satisfaction. Instead of delivering information linearly, you chain unanswered questions throughout your entire script.

Here’s how to execute it in three steps:

1. Open the Loop
Tease an unexpected result or a specific problem right at the start of a segment.
Example: "I tested this $40 wireless mouse against my $150 Logitech GPX, and it actually won—except for one major dealbreaker."

2. Delay the Payoff
Deliver high-value content—build quality, sensor specs, battery life—while holding back that specific "dealbreaker." Viewers will happily watch three minutes of deep-dive testing just to get that single resolution.

3. Close and Chain
Resolve the loop, but immediately open a new one before the viewer’s brain registers closure.
Example: "...so the sensor spins out every time you lift it off the pad. Which brings us to the real question: Can a $5 grip tape mod actually fix a broken sensor, or did I just waste my money?"

Answered the first question, pitched a new reason to stay.

Stop ending video segments with neat little summaries. Summaries signal "time to close the tab." Instead, chain your Curiosity Loops back-to-back from the hook all the way to your end screen, and watch your average view duration skyrocket.
