Your audience has the attention span of a goldfish on espresso. If your first five seconds sound like, "Hey guys, welcome back to the channel, today we’re reviewing..."—they've already swiped away.
To fix your retention curve, you need the Open Loop Hook.
An "Open Loop" is a copywriting trick that plants a high-stakes question or surprising tease in the viewer’s mind, but deliberately delays the answer. Because the human brain craves closure, viewers literally cannot click off until that loop is closed.
Here is how you build one:
- Plant the Loop: Introduce a wild result, a hidden flaw, or a weird experiment.
- Delay the Payoff: Pivot to your main content, promising the reveal later.
- Close the Loop: Deliver the payoff at a high-value moment in the video.
Let’s look at a tech-focused example:
- Boring Hook: "Today I'm testing the M3 Max MacBook Pro against a $5,000 custom PC."
- Open Loop Hook: "This $3,000 MacBook actually beat a $5,000 gaming rig in 4K rendering... but only after I disabled one default Apple setting that almost melted the chassis."
Notice the difference? In the second version, the viewer is instantly hooked on two things: Which rig
won? and What setting almost destroyed the laptop?
You've opened two psychological loops. Now they have to watch your performance benchmarks to get the closure they crave.
The Golden Rule: Never use clickbait you can’t pay off. Deliver the answer cleanly before the video ends, or your comment section will turn into a pitchfork rally. Layer two or three mini-loops across a 10-minute video, and watch your average view duration skyrocket.
