*#06#. If an EID appears, the phone can hold an eSIM. That says nothing about Suica. - FeliCa (Osaifu-Keitai) is the gate tap. Most phones sold outside Japan do not have it. Those travelers need a physical IC card.
JR East Welcome Suica Mobile (info current as of March 2026 on JR East materials): iPhone / Apple Pay, valid 180 days from issue, remaining balance is not refunded. The company app is listed as iOS and watchOS. It is not an Android product today.
Samsung Japan (April 2026) said overseas Galaxy phones launching from the first half of 2027 are intended to support Welcome Suica Mobile. That is not the phone in your pocket this month.
What to do this month
- Pixel, Galaxy, or Pixel-like phone bought in the US or Europe: assume no Suica in Wallet. Buy a physical tourist IC card at Narita or Haneda. Confirm the current product name at the counter — stock has changed since the chip shortage.
- The same phone can still take an eSIM. Install it on home Wi-Fi. Keep the home SIM in the second slot if you need SMS codes from your bank.
- WhatsApp, Maps, and Translate ride the eSIM. They do not need a Japanese phone number.
