Building a Zero-Limit 50GB In-Browser P2P File Transfer with WebRTC

Sending large files over the web typically comes with painful compromises: WeTransfer caps you at 2GB unless you buy a paid plan, Google Drive and Dropbox require both users to have accounts and free cloud quota, and traditional HTTP uploads take forever because files are uploaded to an intermediary server before the recipient can even start downloading.

To solve this, our engineering team at UCDREAMS built FileShareOnline — a 100% free, browser-based peer-to-peer file transfer engine capable of streaming 10GB, 50GB, or even 100GB files directly device-to-device.

Here is a breakdown of how the architecture works and why peer-to-peer WebRTC changes the economics of file sharing.

1. The Bottleneck of Traditional Cloud Relays

In standard cloud file transfers:

  1. Client A uploads chunks over HTTPS to an Amazon S3 or Google Cloud bucket.
  2. The server processes, saves, and generates an expiry token.
  3. Client B gets a link and downloads from S3.

The problems: Bandwidth costs for the provider, strict upload size limits, and privacy risks (your sensitive documents sit on a remote server).

2. The WebRTC Peer-to-Peer Pipeline

With WebRTC RTCDataChannel, browsers establish a direct, encrypted bidirectional UDP stream between each other:

// Initializing a WebRTC Peer Connection with DataChannel
const peerConnection = new RTCPeerConnection({
  iceServers: [
    { urls: 'stun:stun.l.google.com:19302' },
    { urls: 'stun:stun1.l.google.com:19302' }
  ]
});

const dataChannel = peerConnection.createDataChannel('fileTransfer', {
  ordered: true // Ensures ordered byte delivery for clean reconstruction
});

Key Architectural Advantages:

  • Zero Server Storage: Because files stream in binary chunks directly from Sender RAM to Receiver RAM/Disk via the File System Access API, the server never stores a single byte.
  • No File Size Caps: You can transfer 50GB or 100GB files without paying for expensive cloud buckets.
  • End-to-End Encryption: Data transfers are encrypted by default via DTLS/SCTP protocols.

3. Experience the Live Tool

We released this tool completely free with zero sign-up, zero ads, and unlimited transfer sizes.

You can test it directly in your browser:
