Hey Dev.to community! 👋
For the past year, I’ve been working on a solo project that started as a frustration with game development setup. I love Rust, but sometimes setting up a new game project with OpenGL and various dependencies takes hours before you even draw a single pixel.
So, I decided to build my own solution. Meet Venk — a modern, high-performance programming language designed specifically for 2D/3D game development.
Today, I am thrilled to announce the first public release: Venk Beta v0.0.1! 🚀
🤔 What is Venk?
Venk is a completely independent language (written in Rust) with its own Lexer, Parser, and Interpreter. But unlike Python or GDScript, Venk comes with batteries included.
Here are the key features available right now in v0.0.1:
Built-in 2D/3D Engine: Powered by raylib, Venk natively supports 3D cameras, vectors, sprites, particle systems, and collision detection right out of the box.
Procedural Generation: Built-in noise functions allow you to generate massive worlds (RimWorld / WorldBox style) in just a few lines of code.
Native Speed: The interpreter is written in Rust. We moved the heavy math to the Rust backend, allowing us to render 10,000 particles at a stable 60 FPS.
Simple Syntax: Inspired by Rust and Python, it is easy to read and learn.
💻 Let's write some code
Here is how you create a working 3D world in Venk:
venk
fn main() {
init_window(1024, 768, "Venk 3D");
let cam = vek3d_camera_create(10.0, 10.0, 10.0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 45.0);
while not should_close() {
begin_drawing();
clear(20, 20, 30);
vek3d_camera_begin(cam);
vek3d_draw_grid(20, 1.0);
vek3d_draw_cube(0.0, 1.0, 0.0, 2.0, 2.0, 2.0, 255, 100, 100); // Red cube
vek3d_camera_end();
end_drawing();
}
close_window();
}
📦 How to try it
The project is fully Open Source. You can download the Beta for Windows right now:
👉 Download Venk Beta v0.0.1 on GitHub https://github.com/VBanna-coder/venk-lang/releases/tag/v0.0.1-beta
Download venk.exe and raylib.dll.
Put them in the same folder.
Run venk.exe in your terminal to open the interactive console (REPL).
You can test code directly in the console, or write a script (e.g., game.venk) and run it using venk.exe run game.venk.
(Note: The graphical IDE and the standalone .exe bundler are currently in development and will be available in future updates!)
🗺️ What's next?
Since this is the very first beta, I am actively working on fixing bugs and adding new features. Here is the roadmap for the next updates:
Graphical IDE: A built-in code editor for Venk.
Standalone .exe Bundler: Compile your game into a single file to share with friends.
LLVM Backend: Rewriting the compiler to achieve native C++ speeds.
I would love to hear your feedback! Have you ever thought about building your own language? Let me know what you think of the syntax and the 3D engine in the comments below! 👇
