Bluetooth or 2.4GHz headphones? Bluetooth works with everything but has latency. 2.4GHz is faster but needs a USB dongle.
I tested both to show you exactly when each makes sense.
Latency Difference (Measured)
2.4GHz wireless: 20-30ms
Bluetooth (standard): 150-300ms
Bluetooth Low Latency: 40-80ms
2.4GHz is 5-10x faster than regular Bluetooth.
What that means in practice:
Gaming:
- 2.4GHz: Audio synced perfectly with video
- Bluetooth LL: Slight delay noticeable
- Standard BT: Audio lags behind visuals (unplayable)
Big difference for gaming. Not noticeable for music.
When to Get Bluetooth
✅ Music + multi-device
- Spotify/Apple Music listening
- Switch between phone/laptop easily
- No USB ports needed
- Outdoor use (phone pairing)
Example: Sony WH-1000XM5 ($350)
When 2.4GHz Wins
✅ Gaming / low latency
- PC gaming (all genres)
- PS5 gaming
- YouTube/Twitch watching
- Video editing (hearing sync matters)
Example: SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 ($180)
Best Bluetooth Headphones
Budget: Anker Soundcore Q30 ($80)
Best Overall: Sony WH-1000XM5 ($350)
Best Value: Bose QC 45 ($280)
Best 2.4GHz Headphones
Budget: Logitech G535 ($100)
Best Gaming: SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 ($180)
Best Dual-Mode: Logitech G733 ($130)
Battery Life Comparison
2.4GHz gaming:
- Budget: 20-30 hours
- Premium: 35-50 hours
Bluetooth:
- Budget: 40-60 hours
- Premium: 30-40 hours (ANC on)
Bluetooth lasts 20-50% longer per charge.
Price Comparison
2.4GHz:
- Budget = $100
- Best = $180
- Premium = $250
Bluetooth:
- Budget = $80
- Best = $280-350
Similar pricing, but best Bluetooth costs more.
Gaming Test (Valorant)
Audio sync (footsteps to visual):
- 2.4GHz: Perfect sync
- Bluetooth LL: 50ms delay (barely noticeable)
- Standard BT: 200ms delay (unplayable)
For competitive FPS: 2.4GHz only.
The Real Decision
Get Bluetooth if:
- Music is your priority
- Need phone + laptop pairing
- Travel/commute use
- Don't game competitively
Get 2.4GHz if:
- Gaming on PC/PS5
- Need lowest latency
- Don't need phone pairing
- Video editing work
Get both:
Some headphones do Bluetooth + 2.4GHz (like Arctis Nova 7).
My Setup
