These are used to show the info about the repos in GitHub or in a some apps like after creating a react app there will be some .md files created in the background with some info in them, .md is markdown language, markdown languages is mostly used for information or steps about a particular file/folder, we can change README to any but it officially instructs people this particular file is for reading purpose, but the fun fact is even the html tags work in .md files
