How to build a pre-seed financial model in Google Sheets (free template inside)

When I was a VC analyst, I saw hundreds of pitch decks — and the #1 gap was always financial models. Founders either had no numbers or wildly optimistic ones.

Here's the good news: you don't need an MBA or expensive software to build credible pre-seed financials. Google Sheets + basic formulas is enough.

What your pre-seed model must have:

  • 3 years of monthly projections
  • Income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow (linked together)
  • Clear revenue drivers (customers, growth, churn)
  • Burn rate and runway
  • Cap table with founder ownership and dilution

The simplest approach: Build one sheet per area — Revenue, Expenses, Cash Flow, and Summary. Link the outputs with cell references. Set your starting assumptions in one place (growth, churn, pricing) and let the model auto-calculate.

The template I use: I've packaged my VC-tested model into a ready-to-use Google Sheet with pre-filled assumptions for SaaS, marketplace, and service startups. It includes all 5 tabs, formulas, and a cap table.

Want the template? Grab it at the link below — it saves you a full day of spreadsheet work.
