The problem I kept running into
Every big social platform out there — Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok — was designed somewhere else, for someone else's network conditions, someone else's phone specs, someone else's creator economy. India has 800M+ internet users, but very few platforms are actually built around how Indians use their phones: patchy networks, budget Android devices, and a creator base that's mostly locked out of visibility on algorithm-heavy global apps.
That gap is why I built NIVO — a social platform designed from the ground up for India's mobile-first audience.
What NIVO actually does
NIVO brings together the core things people expect from a modern social app, but tuned for lightweight performance and local relevance:
- Posts & Feed — share photos and videos in one clean feed
- Nivi Videos — short-form video, NIVO's take on the format
- Stories — 24-hour disappearing updates
- Nearby — discover NIVO users physically around you
- Nivi Collab — duet-style side-by-side video creation, 1v1 up to 1v4
- Reaction Videos — live reactions, solo or in head-to-head battles
- Private & group messaging, customizable profiles, real-time notifications, and privacy-first data handling — all in one app instead of switching between four or five
Why "built for India" isn't just a tagline
A lot of the engineering effort went into things that don't show up in a feature list:
- Keeping the app fast and lightweight on budget Android devices
- Designing for inconsistent network conditions rather than assuming 5G
- Prioritizing community feedback signals in how content surfaces — so a small creator with genuine engagement isn't invisible next to accounts that already have scale
- Treating user privacy and data handling as a first-class constraint, not an afterthought
The origin story
NIVO's first release actually rolled out on 4 March 2026 — my birthday — before landing on the Google Play Store listing on 11 March 2026. It felt like the right way to launch something I'd been chewing on for a long time: build the Indian social platform I kept wishing existed, instead of waiting for someone else to build it.
Since then, NIVO has crossed 500+ installs, with a meaningful share of early users creating accounts and sticking around — a small but real community forming around a brand-new app.

Would genuinely love feedback from this community, especially from anyone who's worked on lightweight/low-bandwidth mobile apps — what did I miss?
