Django vs FastAPI: Which Python Developer Should You Hire?

Django or FastAPI? Hiring managers ask this before they have written a single job description, and the honest answer is that the framework matters less than the problem you are hiring to solve. Here is how we think about it when helping teams pick a Python backend engineer.

When Django is the better bet

Django ships with an ORM, migrations, an admin panel, authentication and a mature permissions model. If you are building a product with lots of CRUD screens, back-office tooling or content management, a Django developer will get you to a working version quickly.

  • Strong fit: marketplaces, internal dashboards, SaaS with accounts and billing, anything that benefits from the admin.
  • What to test for: query optimization (N+1 problems), migrations on live data, and knowing when to use signals versus explicit calls.

When FastAPI is the better bet

FastAPI is async-first, type-driven and generates OpenAPI docs automatically. It suits services that are mostly API surface: ML model serving, high-concurrency integrations, and microservices behind a separate front end.

  • Strong fit: AI inference endpoints, webhook processors, mobile app backends.
  • What to test for: async correctness, Pydantic modelling, dependency injection, and how they handle background work.

The skills that carry over

Most good candidates can move between the two. What you should screen for regardless of framework:

  1. SQL and data modelling, because bad schemas outlive every framework choice.
  2. Testing with pytest, including API-level tests.
  3. Deployment basics: Docker, environment config, CI, and basic observability.
  4. Security hygiene: input validation, secrets handling, auth flows.

A simple decision rule

If your team needs batteries included and a fast path to a full product, ask for Django. If you are building a lean API or serving models, ask for FastAPI. If you are unsure, hire someone with solid fundamentals and a track record in one of them; picking up the other takes weeks, not months.

Interview questions that separate the two skill sets

For Django: how would you debug a slow list view with related objects? For FastAPI: what happens if a sync function runs inside an async endpoint? The answers tell you far more than a framework trivia quiz.

Skip the sourcing step

If you would rather not run the search yourself, you can hire Python developers with Witarist and get engineers pre-vetted on these exact fundamentals.

Which one do you reach for by default, and why? Tell me in the comments.
