The SaaS Affiliate Strategy That Pays Monthly (Not Just Once)

Last year, I had a breakdown of sorts. Nothing dramatic — just a quiet moment where I stared at my invoicing spreadsheet and realised something was broken. I was billing $85 per article for a content marketing client, churning out four to five pieces a week, and making roughly $1,700 a month before taxes. That sounded decent until I did the math on my hourly rate. After revisions, research, and the inevitable Slack back-and-forth, I was earning less than a barista at a busy coffee shop.
That's the dirty secret of freelance writing. We love to talk about "$X per article" like it's a badge of honor, but nobody calculates the effective hourly. And when a client ghosts you, or a content calendar gets cut in half because the marketing director changed their mind, that $85 per article becomes $0 per article real quick.
I spent most of 2024 searching for ways to make my income less fragile. Retainers helped — locking in a fixed monthly fee for X number of articles gave me a floor under my earnings. But retainers only work if you keep producing. Stop writing, stop getting paid. I wanted something that earned while I slept, wrote, edited, or took a Tuesday afternoon off to watch bad TV.
Affiliate programs were always on my radar, but most of them are garbage for writers. You pitch a product, drop a link, and maybe make $12 if someone buys. There's no recurring component, no compounding value. You're essentially trading your audience's trust for a one-time kickback.
