Can you share your journey of transitioning from various roles like marketing manager and software project manager to becoming a UI/UX designer? How have these diverse experiences shaped your approach to UX/UI design?

Absolutely! I used to work in marketing at a small software company, where I had the opportunity to take on a variety of tasks, including updating our WordPress website. As time went on, I transitioned into software project management, but I realized that I yearned for a more hands-on involvement in the design process. Determined to pursue my passion, I left my job and pursued a certificate in Web Design Basics, in addition to completing the Google UX Certificate. The diverse experiences I gained, such as writing for the web, gathering requirements, turning designs into code, and building relationships with stakeholders, all contributed to shaping my approach to UX/UI design.

How do you combine your passion for both creative and technical work in your role as a UI/UX designer? Could you provide examples of projects where you've effectively blended your design skills with technical knowledge?

In my current position as a UI/UX designer, I have the perfect platform to fuse creativity with technical expertise. I begin by following a comprehensive UX design process, and once the final mockups are approved, I seamlessly transition into coding the actual web pages. This holistic involvement allows me to gain invaluable insights into the practicality of implementing designs and effectively manage timeline expectations. By combining my design skills with technical knowledge, I deliver user-centric experiences that not only captivate visually but also function seamlessly.

In your role as a software project manager, you worked with Agile practices. How has this experience influenced your approach to UX/UI design and collaboration within the Web Dev Path team?

The experience of working with Agile practices as a software project manager has had a profound impact on my approach to UX/UI design and collaboration within the Web Dev Path team. Leveraging tools like Kanban boards to visualize the status of our work greatly enhanced collaboration, especially since our team members were distributed across different time zones. Agile practices, in general, have taught me to break down projects into smaller, manageable tasks, leading to more frequent updates and ensuring efficient progress. I have found that this approach is applicable not only to UX/UI design but also to various other areas.

How did the Web Dev Path project help you prepare for your first job opportunity in design?

The Web Dev Path project provided me with a valuable opportunity to work hands-on with a live project alongside a team of talented individuals. This experience bridged the gap between my solo and academic projects, replicating the real-world dynamics of working collaboratively. Collaborating with other UX designers in tools like Figma and adhering to established branding and design guidelines played a vital role in shaping my understanding of design collaboration. Moreover, learning how to effectively hand off designs to developers was a valuable skill that facilitated the seamless integration of design and development processes.

What advice would you give to individuals who are considering a career transition to UI/UX design, especially those who may have a diverse background like yours? How can they leverage their previous experiences to excel in this field?

My advice to individuals considering a career transition to UI/UX design, particularly those with diverse backgrounds, is to identify the transferable skills from their previous roles. Customer-facing positions can offer insights into empathizing with users, while experience in writing or researching can be highly relevant. It is essential to remain open to new tasks and volunteer for projects outside your comfort zone to gain a well-rounded experience. Every previous role, even those that may not seem directly related to design, can contribute to understanding user needs and making informed design choices. Embrace your diverse background as a strength and leverage it to excel in the dynamic field of UI/UX design.

As a member of the Web Dev Path team, how do you see the project's impact on the web development community? What excites you the most about being involved in an open-source project like this?

I believe that Web Dev Path fills a crucial need for aspiring designers and developers who seek hands-on, real-life experience to prepare for their careers. The project offers a unique opportunity, particularly for those on a self-taught learning path, to gain practical insights that are often challenging to acquire independently. Personally, being a part of the Web Dev Path community has been incredibly rewarding. Knowing that I have contributed, even in a small way, to a project that benefits others like me is truly fulfilling. Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to Mariana for being an inspiring mentor who played a significant role in building my confidence and encouraging me to pursue job opportunities in the field of design.

Great interview - it hit close to home for me. I am a person who started in development, who was then promoted to be the head of development in a marketing department, and is now looking to transition into UX. This was so eerily relevant to me, and good to know I am not alone.
