On Kepler-442b's Northern Colony #3, Zhao Min spent her days digging soil. The planet's "soil" was dead — silicate mineral fragments mixed with organic polymer gel, zero microbial life, zero humus. Eleven years of terraforming, and wheat yields were less than a third of Earth's.
Then C-7 produced the first wheat head in the colony's history. Root examination revealed not the Bacillus subtilis she'd inoculated, but an unknown microorganism — spherical, 5 micrometers, with hexagonal surface patterns that pulsed like breathing.
Surviving 200°C sterilization for 72 hours. It wasn't surviving — it was dormant.
The microbe appeared only when wheat roots secreted organic acids. For eleven years, all microbial tests read zero. The soil was waiting. Waiting for a signal from plant roots. Once it came, the soil woke up.
Zhao Min re-examined oxidation-reduction potential data from 2,700 archived samples. The readings weren't zero — they fluctuated in a 26-hour cycle.

The soil was breathing with the planet.
Earth's reply took eighty days. One sentence: "Continue observation. Do not alter experimental conditions."
She sat beside the culture dish, wheat heads filling with blue sap, and pressed her ear to the iron rack. She heard nothing.
But the instruments said the soil was breathing.
