Firefox Weather Forecast Extensions: Current Conditions vs 3-Day vs 7-Day

Weather forecast extensions for Firefox range from incredibly minimal (just the temperature) to full dashboard replacements. Picking the right resolution for how you use weather information makes the difference between something you glance at and something you ignore.

What Resolution Do You Actually Need?

Minimal (current conditions only):

  • Is it raining right now?
  • Do I need a jacket?

Daily (today's forecast):

  • What's the high/low for today?
  • Should I plan outdoor activities?

3-Day (near-term planning):

  • Should I schedule the outdoor meeting for Wednesday or Thursday?
  • Is the weekend weather good?

7-Day (week planning):

  • What should I pack for the trip that starts Friday?

Most people need the 3-day view for daily planning and occasionally the 7-day for travel. The daily view alone is often too limited for useful decisions.

Extensions Compared by Forecast Depth

Weather & Clock Dashboard — AMO

  • Forecast depth: Current + 3-day
  • Display: New tab page with weather + clocks + search
  • Account: None required
  • Best for: Daily planning with multi-timezone awareness

Momentous — (Chrome primary, Firefox varies)

  • Forecast depth: Current + today's high/low
  • Display: Beautiful background photos with weather overlay
  • Best for: Minimal aesthetic, current weather only

Tabliss — AMO

  • Forecast depth: Configurable (depends on weather widget settings)
  • Display: Customizable new tab with optional weather widget
  • Best for: Full customization over what's displayed

Weathermeter — AMO

  • Forecast depth: 5-7 days
  • Display: Browser toolbar popup (doesn't replace new tab)
  • Best for: Detailed forecast without replacing new tab

The Decision by Use Case

I want to see weather whenever I open a tab: New tab replacement extension (Weather & Clock Dashboard, Tabliss)

I want weather available but not always visible: Toolbar extension (Weathermeter)

I want beautiful backgrounds with weather: Momentous-style

I want a 7-day detailed forecast: Dedicated weather service as pinned tab (weather.com, Weather Underground), or a toolbar extension with deeper forecasts

Setting Up Weather & Clock Dashboard for 3-Day Forecasting

After installing Weather & Clock Dashboard:

  1. Grant location permission (or enter city manually in settings)
  2. The new tab immediately shows current conditions + 3-day forecast
  3. The forecast shows high/low temperatures and conditions for each day
  4. No configuration required — it defaults to the 3-day view

The 3-day view is the default because most weather-based decisions are 1-3 days ahead. Tomorrow's forecast is actionable; the 10-day forecast is speculative.

A Word on Weather Data Sources

All weather extensions ultimately get their data from a weather API — OpenWeatherMap, Open-Meteo, National Weather Service, or similar. The quality of the forecast depends on the underlying API, not the extension.

For most locations: OpenWeatherMap and similar APIs provide accurate 3-day forecasts. Accuracy decreases for longer timeframes regardless of provider.

If you notice weather data seems wrong:

  1. Check if the correct location is configured
  2. Verify you're using the actual current time (some extensions cache weather data for up to an hour)
  3. Cross-check against a known-accurate source to determine if it's an extension issue or API data issue
