If you're building AI features that take longer than a few seconds, you need a background job system. Not a queue — an orchestration layer. Inngest and Trigger.dev are the two clear leaders for TypeScript/Next.js shops. Here's what I learned after running both in production with Claude agents.
The Core Problem
AI pipelines break the request-response model. A user asks your app to analyze a document, run a multi-step agent, or process a batch — these take 10-120 seconds. You can't hold an HTTP connection open. You need:
- A place to run the work outside the request cycle
- Retry logic when an LLM call fails
- Visibility into what happened
- Fan-out for parallel workloads
Both Inngest and Trigger.dev solve this. The how is different.
Inngest: Event-Driven, Step Functions in Code
Inngest's model is dead simple: you write functions that react to events. Each function is broken into step.* calls — Inngest handles retries, concurrency, and fan-out.

What Inngest does well:
- Step-level retries (Claude call fails → only that step retries, not the whole job)
- Local dev server (
npx inngest-cli dev) that replays events - Fan-out with
step.waitForEventfor human-in-the-loop flows - Works with any hosting: Vercel, Railway, your own server
Where it hurts:
- Pricing gets real at scale (event volume based)
- The local dev setup requires running two servers
- Complex branching logic gets verbose
Trigger.dev: Task-Centric, Long-Running First
Trigger.dev v3 flipped the model: instead of event-driven functions, you define tasks — long-running workers that execute in their own isolated process. This matters when you're hitting Vercel's 60-second function limit.

What Trigger.dev does well:
- True long-running tasks (minutes, not seconds)
- Machine types — you can run CPU-heavy work on bigger instances

- Simpler code — no step wrapping, just write async/await
Where it hurts:
- Requires Trigger.dev's own infrastructure (can self-host, but not trivial)
- v3 is a significant rewrite from v2 — migration is real work
- Dashboard is less polished than Inngest's

My Setup: Inngest for Webhooks, Trigger.dev for Agents
I run both. Inngest handles Stripe webhooks, user onboarding sequences, and real-time notifications — events that need choreography and replay. Trigger.dev handles the actual Claude agent pipelines that run for 2-5 minutes analyzing codebases, generating content batches, and processing documents.
The two don't conflict. They solve different layers of the same problem.
One Gotcha With Claude + Inngest
Inngest's step functions serialize state between steps. If your Claude response is huge (long tool use chains, big outputs), that serialized state bloats. Store large outputs in your DB and pass references:

Pricing Reality
- Inngest free tier: 50k function runs/month — plenty for early-stage
- Trigger.dev free tier: 250k compute seconds/month — generous for non-GPU tasks
- At scale: Both run $50-200/month for a moderate AI SaaS
Neither will bankrupt you until you have real traffic. Start with whichever fits your deploy target.
