MCP vs Skills: Which Architecture Actually Wins in 2026?

The debate is heating up. "I still prefer MCP over skills" hit the top of Hacker News this week, and the 129-comment thread exposed a real fault line in how developers think about building AI tooling.

I've built both. Here's the unfiltered take.


What We're Actually Comparing

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is Anthropic's open protocol for connecting AI models to external tools and data sources. You define a server, expose tools with typed schemas, and Claude calls them over a standardized wire protocol.

Skills (sometimes called "slash commands" or "custom instructions") are declarative behavior packs — markdown files that tell the model how to behave in certain situations. No network call. No server. Just context injection.

These aren't the same category of thing, which is exactly why the debate gets muddled.


When MCP Wins

MCP dominates when you need real-world side effects:

  • Querying a live database
  • Writing to the filesystem
  • Calling third-party APIs (Stripe, GitHub, Notion)
  • Running shell commands with real output
  • Returning data that changes between calls

The typed schema enforcement is underrated. When Claude calls an MCP tool, it gets structured output it can reason about. You can validate inputs, handle errors, return structured data. It's a real function call, not a prompt trick.

Real latency matters here. MCP adds a round-trip. For fast-path tasks (write a function, explain code, review a PR), that latency is pure overhead.


When Skills Win

Skills win when you need behavioral consistency, not data retrieval:

  • "Always use TDD when writing tests"
  • "Before committing, run this checklist"
  • "When debugging, follow this investigation order"
  • "When the user says /deploy, execute this workflow"

A well-written skill is loaded once into context and shapes every response. No server, no latency, no network failures. Just behavior.

The power of skills is composability. I run 40+ skills in my Claude Code setup. They stack. A debugging skill + a git skill + a code-review skill combine into a workflow that would take 200 lines of MCP tooling to replicate — and be less reliable.

4. Stage only related files
5. Never commit .env or credentials

Zero infrastructure. Runs anywhere. Impossible to break with a server restart.


The Real Answer: Use Both

The HN thread missed this. MCP and skills aren't competing — they're complementary layers:

  • Skills define the workflow (how to review a PR, how to debug, how to post content)
  • MCP executes the actions (query Stripe, push to GitHub, upload to YouTube)

The skill says "when deploying, do X, Y, Z." MCP tools are what X, Y, Z actually call.


What I'd Tell Someone Starting Fresh in 2026

  1. Start with skills. Zero infrastructure. Immediate results. You'll learn what behavior you actually want before you over-engineer.

  2. Add MCP when you hit a wall. The wall is usually: "I need real data from an external system" or "I need a side effect that persists."

  3. Don't build MCP tools for things that are just prompting. I've seen people build MCP servers to return "how to write tests" — that's a skill, not a tool call.

  4. Skill quality beats MCP quantity. A focused, well-tested skill that shapes 100 workflows beats a sprawling MCP server that's broken half the time.


The Takeaway

The HN author is right that MCP is underused. They're wrong that skills are the problem. The developers winning right now are using both — skills for behavior, MCP for action — and treating them as two layers of the same system.

Building AI agents in 2026 isn't about picking a protocol. It's about understanding which layer of the stack you're working at.
