Every CAD buyer feels it: the annual subscription that compounds per seat, per year, forever. Vendors call it "flexible licensing." We call it what our data shows it to be — the dominant model, but no longer the only one.
We maintain a comparison database of CAD, BIM, and CAE tools at CADGuide.tools. For this report we analyzed the 164 tools with complete licensing data. Here's what the 2026 market actually looks like.
Finding 1: Subscription is dominant but not total
- Subscription-only: 86 tools (52%)
- Perpetual: 46 tools (28%)
- Free: 13 tools
- Freemium: 10 tools
- Subscription/perpetual hybrid: 5 tools
- Open source: 4 tools
If you assumed the subscription wave swept everything, the 28% perpetual share — plus the hybrid holdouts — is the news. The challengers didn't just survive; they compete on it.
Finding 2: Perpetual is not the budget option at the high end
Among the 40 perpetual-license tools with published pricing: the minimum is $145, the median is $3,000, and the top reaches $12,000. Perpetual licensing at the enterprise/CAE end is an anchor investment, not a discount play.
The budget sweet spot is elsewhere: a cluster of capable perpetual licenses sits between $399 and $499 (progeCAD, GstarCAD) — the segment that competes directly with AutoCAD's $2,030/year.
Finding 3: The platform gap is real
Only 25% of the tools we index support macOS natively, and 20% support Linux. If your firm is Apple-based or Linux-based, your options are a quarter of the market — and the LISP-compatible 2D challengers are almost entirely Windows-only.
What this means for buyers
- 2D-centric shops have real leverage now: perpetual challengers cost 10-25% of AutoCAD's annual subscription and keep your LISP routines.
- 3D/analysis-heavy teams should budget for subscriptions — the deep simulation and cloud tools are mostly rental-only — but should also verify what a perpetual "anchor" license from the same vendor covers.
- Mixed-platform teams should filter by platform support FIRST. It eliminates three-quarters of the market instantly and clarifies everything after.
Methodology
Data from the CADGuide.tools comparison database, September 2026: 164 tools with complete licensing and pricing data across 2D CAD, 3D mechanical, BIM, CAE/simulation, and EDA categories. Starting prices are vendor-published entry tiers; vendors adjust pricing, so verify before purchase.
