How to Teach Kids to Write Numbers in Words: A Parent's Step-by-Step Guide

Kids learn to count long before they learn to write "forty-seven" instead of 47 — and the jump from digits to words trips up more children than most parents expect. Here is a practical, step-by-step way to teach it at home.

Step 1: Start with 0–20

These are the irregulars — eleven, twelve, thirteen — and there is no shortcut; they need memorising. Flashcards or a number line on the fridge work well.

Step 2: Master the tens

Twenty, thirty, forty (note: not "fourty" — the most common spelling mistake kids make), fifty, up to ninety. Once the tens are solid, two-digit numbers become a join-the-dots exercise: forty + seven = forty-seven.

Step 3: Introduce the hyphen rule

Compound numbers between 21 and 99 are hyphenated: twenty-one, sixty-four, ninety-nine. Kids forget this constantly, so make it a game — every missing hyphen costs a point.

Step 4: Tackle hundreds and thousands

"Three hundred forty-five" — and this is where the "and" debate appears. In American English the "and" is usually dropped; in British English it is kept (three hundred and forty-five). Pick one convention and stay consistent so the child is not confused.

Step 5: Practise with real life

Have them write out prices from a grocery receipt, or the amount on a birthday card. Real context sticks far better than worksheets.

A free numbers-to-words converter is a great self-check tool: the child converts a number, writes the answer by hand, then verifies it instantly. WordsForNumbers does exactly this — no sign-up needed — which turns practice into a game kids can run themselves.

Keep it short and steady

Ten minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday. Celebrate the small wins, and within a few weeks "seventy-three" will feel as natural as 73.
