I think the real problem is the quality of the tools we use. Email had issues, but at least it wasn't ever-present.

So many of the tools we use today are designed to distract and gain our attention. The articles you linked are great for being more productive, but it seems absurd to me that we use tools that are so distracting by default that they require extra set up to be useful.

That being said, I think there are four good comm channels that should be used at a software company:

  • email, for outward facing and company wide communication
  • a simple chat tool, for discussion through the day (I really like twist.com)
  • github, gitlab etc, for communicating about code
  • a real time, collaborative place to hold company notes, handbooks, etc, something like Notion or Google Docs

I think you then need to have good rules about what goes in each place.
