Running God of War III Remastered on PC: how the gow3_pc community project actually works

God of War III Remastered never got an official PC release. But in October 2026 there is a community project — gow3_pc — that runs the game on PC, and the way it does it is genuinely interesting from an engineering standpoint.

I keep a small field guide for it at godofwar3remasteredpc.wiki, and I want to explain the architecture, because "community port" hides a lot.

What it actually is

gow3_pc is not a from-scratch reimplementation. It executes the original x86-64 CPU code of the PS4 Remastered edition with a custom runtime, and reuses shadPS4's Vulkan graphics core (plus fixes from cuesta4). You need your own PS4 game files — eboot.bin, sce_module, sce_sys.

Two honest caveats the project itself makes:

  • It is not a Sony-supported PC release.
  • Running CPU code directly does not mean "no emulation" — shadPS4's CPU execution model is part of how it works. "Native" is not automatically "faster"; that claim needs the same hardware, build, scene, settings and cache state.

Three routes, three different games

Route Game edition Boundary
gow3_pc PS4 God of War III Remastered Project's extracted PS4 folder + its launcher
standalone shadPS4 PS4 God of War III Remastered That emulator's own setup and data location
RPCS3 PS3 God of War III PS3 executable and saves do not become Remastered inputs

This is the first thing people get wrong: files, settings and saves do not cross routes. A PS3 save doesn't become a Remastered save; an emulator's graphics recipe doesn't apply to the port.

Requirements (release 2.4.1, checked October 2026)

  • Windows 10 build 1903+ or Windows 11, 64-bit
  • 64-bit CPU with AVX (e.g. Intel Sandy Bridge 2011+ / AMD FX+)
  • Vulkan 1.3 GPU driver
  • Your own PS4 Remastered dump

Linux is an experimental AppImage needing glibc 2.39+. And budget disk space beyond the download: the Windows ZIP is about 71.3 MiB, the Linux AppImage about 128.6 MiB, and the shader cache has been reported to exceed 20 GB.

Known GPU issues worth checking first

The 2.4.0 known-issue list (inherited by 2.4.1) is specific, not vague:

  • Intel HD 630 — black/blue rendering
  • Iris Xe — first-level crashes
  • Intel UHD — device-loss reports
  • RX 580 — Format10_11_11 crash
  • Hybrid AMD-integrated + NVIDIA laptops — the launcher disables a switchable-graphics Vulkan layer that can hide the dGPU

If you hit a symptom, check the specific card before you touch settings.

Performance: a reference, not a promise

The maintainer's reference system (RX 6700 XT, Ryzen 5 5600X, 32 GB) reports about 144 FPS average, range 55–240, at native 1080p with the 240 FPS engine setting. That is a reference point, not a minimum, and not a prediction for your laptop.

What I'd take away as a developer

  1. "Native" is a spectrum. CPU code native + GPU emulated is still a hybrid — and that's fine, as long as you say so.
  2. Don't mix configuration across routes. Most "it crashes" reports are really "I copied a PS3 patch into a PS4 runtime."
  3. Document what you haven't measured. The project explicitly labels unmeasured claims — that is better engineering communication than most commercial release notes.

The full guide — install routes, requirements, black screen, crashes, stuttering fixes, ultrawide, mods and updates — is at godofwar3remasteredpc.wiki.

Have you tried running PS4 titles on PC? What worked for you?
