Record on the Walk, Ask Claude About It Before You're Home

Record on the Walk, Ask Claude About It Before You're Home

Twenty minutes into a walk you figure out why the launch plan feels wrong. You record it: three minutes of talking, a couple of false starts, one sentence that's actually the insight. Then you want to push on it. What's the counterargument? What would you have to believe for the old plan to be right? That's a conversation, and you want it now, on the walk, while the idea is warm.

Until now that meant waiting. The recording was in one app, Claude was in another, and getting one into the other meant finding the transcript, copying it and pasting it in. That's annoying at a desk and impossible with one thumb on a sidewalk.

With SpeakPen connected to Claude, you skip that. You record in SpeakPen, open the Claude app, and say: "Read the SpeakPen note I just recorded and argue with it." Claude fetches the note itself.

The one-time setup (on a computer, about two minutes)

Claude's custom connectors are added on claude.ai on the web. Anthropic's help center says connectors you add there follow your account into Claude Desktop and the Claude mobile apps. So you do this once at a desk, and your phone picks it up.

  1. On claude.ai, open Customize → Connectors, click + Add, then Add custom connector.
  2. Name it SpeakPen, paste https://speakpen.app/mcp, and click Continue. Leave the sign-in settings as they are, click Continue again, then Add.
  3. When Claude asks you to sign in, sign in to SpeakPen (Google works) and click Allow.

We ran this flow end to end on claude.ai on October 6, 2026: sign-in with Google, consent, token refresh, and Claude listing recent notes. Whether custom connectors are available to you depends on your Claude plan and workspace settings.

What Claude can do with your notes

Three things, all read-only:

  • List your recent notes, newest first, up to 50, optionally between two dates.
  • Search titles, summaries and full transcripts, up to 10 matches.
  • Read one note in full: title, summary, transcript, category, date and length.

It can't create, edit or delete a note, and it never receives your audio, only the text. In SpeakPen, Settings → Connections lists Claude under AI assistants, with when it last used the connection, and a Disconnect button that cuts access immediately.

On the walk: four prompts that work one-handed

Short prompts, because you're typing with a thumb or dictating. Each one says "SpeakPen" so Claude reaches for the connector.

Push back on it

Read my latest SpeakPen note. Give me the strongest argument against it in three sentences.

Find the earlier version

Search my SpeakPen notes for anything about the launch plan before today. Did I already think this and drop it?

Shrink it to a decision

From my last SpeakPen note: what's the one decision I'm actually facing, and what would I need to know to make it?

Tie the week together

Read my SpeakPen notes from this week. Which of today's ideas connects to something I said on Monday?

By the time you're home you've had the argument, not just recorded the idea.

Things to know before you rely on it

  • A brand-new note takes a moment. Claude only sees a note once it's transcribed, usually within a minute. If it says it can't find it, ask again shortly.
  • Claude doesn't save into SpeakPen. If the conversation produced something worth keeping, say it back into SpeakPen as a new note. Then it's part of your record too.
  • Recording has limits; connecting doesn't. Connecting Claude is free on every SpeakPen plan. Free is 3 notes a month of up to 5 minutes each. Pro is $9.9/month for 60 notes of up to 20 minutes each.
  • Make capture one press. On iPhone, add SpeakPen's button to Control Center or the Lock Screen, or say "Record with SpeakPen" to Siri. On Android, add the SpeakPen tile to Quick Settings. If capture means unlocking and finding an app, you won't do it on a walk.

Already using Obsidian?

Keep it. The SpeakPen Sync plugin still writes every note into your vault as Markdown, one way. Claude reads the same notes from SpeakPen directly, which is why this works from your phone while your laptop is closed.

Try it on your next walk

Add the connector on claude.ai tonight. Tomorrow, record one thing on your walk and ask the Claude app to argue with it before you get home.
