The Questions You Can Only Ask Your Notes After 90 Days

The Questions You Can Only Ask Your Notes After 90 Days

You already use ChatGPT or Claude to think out loud. You paste in a problem, it helps you untangle it, and the conversation ends. Tomorrow you start from zero. The AI is good at the thinking you bring to it. It knows nothing about the thinking you did on Tuesday's walk, or last month, or the slow way your view on a project shifted over a quarter.

Some of the most useful questions you could ask about your own work can't be answered in one sitting, because the answer is spread across months:

  • What have I changed my mind about since summer, and what changed it?
  • Which idea do I keep coming back to without ever acting on?
  • What did I say I'd do in July that I never mentioned again?

No prompt fixes this. The raw material has to exist first. This post is about starting that raw material today, cheaply, so that in 90 days those questions have something to read.

Why it has to be voice, and why it has to be small

Your notes app already has a "proper" system in it. That's the problem. Proper systems get used for proper thoughts: the finished argument, the decided plan. The material the 90-day questions need is the unfinished stuff. "I'm not sure the pricing page is the problem." "Talked to D, she thinks onboarding is fine, I don't buy it." That stuff happens away from the keyboard, takes twenty seconds to say, and is never worth opening a laptop for.

So the capture has to cost almost nothing:

  • iPhone: a SpeakPen button in Control Center or on the Lock Screen, or "Record with SpeakPen" to Siri. Recording starts without opening the app.
  • Android: the SpeakPen tile in Quick Settings.
  • Desktop: speakpen.app/app in a tab.

You talk; a minute later there's a note with a title, a short summary, a category and the full transcript. You don't file it, tag it or re-read it. The point isn't to process each note. It's to keep a dated record of what you were actually thinking, in your own words, every week.

How the AI reads three months at once

SpeakPen runs a read-only MCP server at https://speakpen.app/mcp. ChatGPT, Claude, and coding agents like Claude Code or Codex can connect to it with a normal sign-in, and from then on they can look through your notes themselves:

  • Recent notes between any two dates, up to 50 per request. An agent asking about a quarter just asks in a few date ranges.
  • Search across titles, summaries and full transcripts, up to 10 matches per query.
  • Read a note in full, including the transcript.

It's read-only by construction: there's no tool to change or delete a note, and audio is never sent, only text. You can disconnect any assistant in Settings → Connections.

If you keep an Obsidian vault, the SpeakPen Sync plugin also puts every note there as Markdown, one way, into the vault. Same notes, two places to use them.

The 90-day questions, written down now

Write these down today, so you remember to ask them. Each one names SpeakPen so the assistant knows to look.

Changed mind

Read my SpeakPen notes from the last 90 days about [project]. Where did my position change? Quote what I said before and after, with dates, and tell me what seems to have changed it.

The loop you're stuck in

Search my SpeakPen notes for ideas I've mentioned three or more times in the last three months. For each, tell me whether I ever recorded taking a step on it.

Dropped commitments

Find every SpeakPen note since July where I said I would do something. Which of those never come up again?

What you actually care about

Ignore the categories. Based on how often and how long I talk about things in my SpeakPen notes this quarter, what do I seem to care about most? Is that what I'd say if you asked me directly?

The quotes are the point. A summary of your thinking is the AI's opinion. Your own sentences with dates are evidence, and you can check them.

What 90 days actually costs

Be honest about the numbers before you start:

  • Free: 3 notes a month, up to 5 minutes each. That's enough to try the loop once, not to build a quarter of material.
  • Pro: $9.9/month for 60 notes, up to 20 minutes each. About two a day, which is what this habit looks like in practice.
  • Connecting an AI is free on every plan. It's the recording that counts against the limit.

Ninety days of two short notes a day is around 180 notes. That's enough for "what changed my mind" to have a real answer.

What won't happen

  • The AI won't remember anything between chats. It re-reads your notes each time you ask, so the notes are the memory.
  • It won't write anything back. If the answer is worth keeping, copy it into your vault or your doc.
  • It won't fix a quarter you didn't record. The only way to ask the 90-day question in January is to start in October.

Start the clock today

  1. Install SpeakPen on your phone (or open speakpen.app/app) and record one thing you're unsure about right now.
  2. Connect it to the assistant you already use. Steps for ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Codex and Cursor: https://speakpen.app/connect
  3. Put a reminder in your calendar 90 days from today: "Ask SpeakPen what changed my mind."
