Voice notes Obsidian Claude Code: an idea pipeline that actually compounds

Most good ideas don't die because you forgot them. They die because you did write them down, in an app with a few hundred other notes, and nothing ever brought them back.

This is the setup I use to make spoken ideas turn into real work. It has three links, and each one matters.

Link 1: Capture by voice, not typing

Ideas show up while walking, driving, or listening to a podcast, when typing on a phone is too slow or impossible. The ideas worth keeping also take a few minutes to say, with pauses while you think. A one-line quick-capture box can't hold that.

So the first link is voice capture of the whole ramble, turned into something readable: a title, a summary, and a cleaned-up transcript, not an audio file you'll never replay.

Link 2: Land it as a plain Markdown file in your vault

Where the note ends up decides whether it compounds. If it's a row in someone else's database, it's stuck there. If it's a plain .md file in your Obsidian vault, then:

  • You own it. Cancel any subscription and the notes are still on disk.
  • It links to everything else you've written, with backlinks and graph view.
  • It's in a folder, and folders are what AI tools can read.

Link 3: Point your agent at the vault

Claude Code, Codex, and similar agents can read a directory with no special integration. Open your agent in (or pointed at) the vault and try prompts like:

Read the voice notes from the last two weeks in /Inbox/Voice.
Group them by theme, link related notes with [[wikilinks]],
and draft a short outline for the strongest idea.
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode
Find every note where I mentioned "pricing" and summarize
how my thinking changed over time.
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

The stray thought from Tuesday's walk becomes context for Friday's work, and your next idea starts from a sharper place.

The tool I built for links 1 and 2

SpeakPen is the voice-to-vault part of this pipeline:

  • Record on iPhone (iOS 17+), Android (Google Play), or in a desktop browser.
  • Works in 99 languages, and returns a titled, summarized note.
  • Syncs into your vault through the SpeakPen Sync plugin from Obsidian's community plugin store, as plain Markdown.

Link 3 is just your agent of choice. If you want one that works on local folders without any API-key setup, Marlo is a free, open-source desktop AI coworker for Mac and Windows: give it a folder, describe the outcome, and approve the plan before it changes anything.

SpeakPen and Marlo are made by Qumge.
