AI Max for Gyms and Fitness Studios: Google Ads That Actually Drive Memberships

Gyms and fitness studios have a specific Google Ads problem: the conversion is a membership, but the ad system optimizes for clicks. AI Max for Search makes this better — but only if you configure it correctly for the fitness industry's unusual patterns.

The January Problem (and Why AI Max Makes It Worse by Default)

Fitness advertising has the most extreme seasonality of almost any local service business. January is 2-4x normal volume. February drops sharply. Summer sees another modest peak; fall is slow.

Default AI Max behavior: it learns from your conversion history and allocates budget accordingly. If AI Max learns from a January baseline, it will overspend during slow months and potentially under-deliver during the next January when budget is not scaled up.

Configure your AI Max campaigns with seasonality adjustments in Smart Bidding. For the fitness industry: set a positive seasonality adjustment for December 26 through January 15 (pre-New Year planning and early January signups are both high-value). Set a negative adjustment for February.

The June 2026 data deletion removed historical conversion data that informed seasonal patterns. If you can recover this from GA4 (filter Traffic Acquisition by google/cpc source), do so before setting seasonality adjustments.

Search Themes for Fitness Conversions

AI Max uses search themes as guidance — not hard keyword targeting. For a gym, the right search themes cover:

High-intent membership themes: "gym membership near me," "join [gym type]," "fitness center [city]," "monthly gym membership"

Service-specific themes: "personal training near me," "group fitness classes," "yoga studio," "HIIT classes"

Competitor-adjacent themes: "[competitor type] alternative" — people researching alternatives to big chains are often prime prospects for independent studios

Deal-motivated themes: "first month free gym," "no contract gym," "try gym free"

Do not add generic fitness content terms as search themes ("workout tips," "how to lose weight," "best exercises"). These attract informational traffic with no membership intent.

The Membership vs. Day Pass Conversion Split

AI Max optimizes toward your declared conversion goals. If you sell both memberships and day passes, you need separate conversion actions with different values.

A membership signup at $49/month with average 14-month retention = $686 LTV. A day pass at $20 is a single transaction. Blending these conversions teaches AI Max to optimize for a mix, which often means it finds day pass conversions (lower friction, higher volume) and underfunds the harder membership conversion acquisition.

Create a separate campaign for membership acquisition with only membership signup as the conversion action. Use Target CPA bidding with your cost-per-membership target. Day pass and trial promotion can run in a separate campaign with its own goals.

Negative Keywords: Fitness Industry Specific

The AI Max negative keyword guide covers the general mechanics. For fitness specifically:

  • Equipment searches: "treadmill for sale," "gym equipment," "home gym setup" — these are product buyers, not facility members
  • Employment queries: "gym jobs," "personal trainer job," "fitness instructor hiring"
  • Nutrition-only queries: "meal plan," "diet plan," "weight loss program" (unless you offer these)
  • Insurance/medical: "physical therapy," "medical gym," "cardiac rehab" — specific clinical context you probably don't serve
  • Extreme niche: "bodybuilding competition," "powerlifting meet" — unless your facility caters specifically to competitive athletes

AI Max for Shopping: Fitness Merchandise

If you sell branded merchandise, supplements, or fitness equipment, AI Max for Shopping provides a second conversion path alongside your membership campaigns. Running both in parallel — Search for membership intent, Shopping for product discovery — often surfaces customers who convert on merchandise first and then become members.

The DSA Transition for Multi-Location Fitness

Chains with multiple locations often built DSA campaigns targeting individual location pages. Each page had location-specific content (hours, amenities, directions) that DSA used to generate relevant headlines.

DSA retires in February 2027. For multi-location fitness brands: replace with AI Max for Search, URL expansion scoped to location pages, and location-specific search themes for each major market.

The advantage: AI Max's URL expansion can surface location pages contextually based on the searcher's location signals, often more accurately than DSA's page-content matching.

The July 2026 ToS: Fitness Industry Implications

The July 2026 Google Ads ToS update formalized that AI Max can generate ad creative combinations. For fitness advertising, this matters for:

Before/after claims: AI-generated combinations might create before/after implication statements that violate advertising standards in some jurisdictions. Review your asset set carefully — any headline that implies transformation results can be combined with descriptions that make medical-adjacent claims.

Trial offer terms: If you have promotional assets with specific terms ("first month free," "no contract"), ensure the terms and conditions are accurate for the combinations AI creates. An asset saying "first month free" combined with a description that doesn't mention the cancellation requirement could be an FTC issue.

Keep your asset set tightly controlled. Provide fewer, carefully-reviewed assets rather than many assets that the AI can freely combine.
