Law firms face a specific set of constraints when running Google Ads with AI Max for Search. Attorney advertising rules, lead quality standards, jurisdiction targeting, and the economics of high-cost-per-click practice areas require configuration well beyond the defaults.
Practice Area Segmentation
Blending multiple practice areas in a single AI Max campaign produces poor results for nearly every law firm. A personal injury campaign and a corporate M&A campaign have completely different search intent, conversion economics, and geographic scope. AI Max cannot optimize effectively for both simultaneously.
Segment by practice area. At minimum: separate campaigns for personal injury, estate planning, family law, criminal defense, business law. Each gets its own search themes, landing pages, and conversion targets.
The Economics of Legal Keywords
Personal injury keywords can run $50-200 per click. Estate planning keywords run $20-60. Criminal defense varies dramatically by market — DUI defense in major metros can reach $100+.
At these CPCs, a Target CPA bid strategy requires careful setup. If your average personal injury case generates $15,000 in attorney fees and you close 1 in 25 leads (4%), the maximum cost-per-lead is $600. Set Target CPA no higher than that.
The AI Max shopping guide covers bid strategy mechanics. For legal, the key additional variable is case value, which varies enormously by practice area and geographic market.
Attorney Advertising Compliance in AI Max
Under the July 2026 Google Ads ToS update, AI Max can generate and test ad creative combinations. For law firms, this creates bar compliance exposure.
Most state bar associations have specific rules about:
- Claims of specialization without certification
- Superlative language ("best," "top," "most successful")
- Outcome promises or past results in advertising
- The disclaimer requirements for certain practice areas
AI-generated combinations of your approved assets can inadvertently produce non-compliant statements. Review every asset combination your set can create before running at scale. Consult your state bar's advertising rules and keep your asset set narrow and explicitly vetted.
Negative Keywords for Legal
Legal firms have predictable categories of wasted spend:
- Legal information queries: "what is negligence," "how does probate work," "can my employer do X" — informational, not ready to hire
- DIY legal queries: "how to file for divorce yourself," "do it yourself will," "legal aid"
- Competing practice areas: a family law firm should negative out personal injury terms and vice versa
- Career-related: "paralegal job," "law school," "bar exam"
- Overseas jurisdiction terms: if you only practice in specific states, negative out other states and countries
The AI Max negative keyword guide covers account-level versus campaign-level configuration. For law firms: build practice-area exclusions as campaign negatives and career/informational terms as account negatives.
Geographic Targeting and State Jurisdiction
Law firms are licensed by jurisdiction. A California personal injury firm should not run ads nationally. AI Max's default URL expansion may surface your firm to out-of-jurisdiction searchers.
Configure geographic targeting tightly — by state, county, or metro area depending on your practice scope. Add negative keywords for other state names and major cities in jurisdictions where you don't practice.
For multi-state practices, consider separate campaigns per licensed state, each with state-specific search themes and landing pages.
The DSA Transition for Law Firm Websites
Many law firms ran Dynamic Search Ads against their practice area pages and attorney bio pages. DSA auto-generated headlines from page content — pulling attorney names, practice area descriptions, and location information to create contextually relevant ads.
DSA retires in February 2027. Replace with AI Max for Search with URL expansion scoped to practice area pages. The search themes should mirror your primary practice areas.
Do not point URL expansion at attorney bio pages — these produce low-quality landing page experiences for cold traffic. Direct new visitor traffic to practice area pages with clear calls to action.
Historical Data Recovery
The June 2026 Google Ads data deletion removed historical keyword performance and search term data. For law firms, the data with highest recovery value is seasonal: legal advertising has notable peaks around tax season (estate planning), DUI arrest peaks (major holidays), and divorce filing patterns (January).
Recover from GA4 using the Traffic Acquisition report with google/cpc filter. The session and conversion event data for the deleted periods survives in GA4 if you had auto-tagging enabled.
Conversion Tracking for Legal
Track the conversion actions that actually predict client acquisition:
- Phone calls from call extensions (3+ minutes for legal consultations)
- Contact form completions (not the "Learn more" clicks)
- Live chat sessions (if you use chat software)
- Intake form completions (if your intake is separate from initial contact)
Do not track general page views or time on site. For legal, the conversion path is specific: search → landing page → call or form → intake → engagement → client.
Set conversion values if you can estimate average case value per practice area. AI Max will optimize toward higher-value cases when conversion values differ between practice areas.
