Competitor SEO analysis identifies exactly what your competitors are doing that you are not — and where to focus first.
Identify Your SERP Competitors First
Your business competitors and your SERP competitors are often different.
For SEO purposes: Open a private browser. Search each of your 10 priority keywords.
List the domains consistently in positions 1–5.
These — not your industry competitors — are who you are competing with in Google.
Keyword Gap Analysis
Tools: Ahrefs, SEMrush, or Moz.
Find: Keywords where your top 3 SERP competitors rank positions 1–10 but you do not rank at all.
Filter to: Keywords relevant to your business (remove irrelevant topics).
Sort by: Estimated traffic volume.
Output: Your content creation priority list.
Backlink Gap Analysis
Find: Domains that link to 2+ of your competitors but not to you.
These sites have proven willingness to link to content in your topic area.
Priority outreach targets: Sites linking to 3+ of your competitors.
Content Quality Comparison
For each keyword where a competitor outranks you, open their page and yours.
Measure the gap:
- Word count and depth of coverage
- Number of specific examples, data, or statistics
- Content freshness (last updated date)
- Schema markup present or absent
- Core Web Vitals (PageSpeed Insights)
Build your update hypothesis from what you actually observe.
