Internal Linking for SEO: A Practical 2026 Guide

Internal linking is consistently underutilized. It is free, entirely within your control, and produces measurable ranking improvements in 4–8 weeks.

Understanding PageRank Distribution

Think of PageRank as water flowing through pipes:

  • External backlinks bring PageRank into specific pages
  • Internal links distribute PageRank to other pages
  • Your goal: Pipe authority from pages that have it to pages that need it

Finding Your PageRank Source Pages

In Ahrefs → Site Explorer → Pages → Best by Referring Domains.

Your top 20 pages by external referring domains: These are your reservoirs.
Every internal link FROM these pages carries real authority.

Implementation: Priority Target System

  1. List your 10 highest-priority pages (those you most want to rank)
  2. For each target page: Find 3–5 hub pages where a contextual link would be natural
  3. Add the link with keyword-rich anchor text
  4. Don't use the same anchor text for every link to the same target

Anchor Text Distribution

Type Target % Example
Exact match 40% "google ads management"
Partial match 40% "managing Google Ads for B2B"
Brand / generic 20% "learn more" / "yositeup"

Internal link anchor text is a stronger ranking signal than external anchor text because you control it completely.

Tracking Results

After implementation: Track target page positions weekly in Google Search Console.
Typical movement: 4–8 weeks.
