A while back, I jumped onto the hype train and tried to host Learn JavaScript's marketing page on Netlify — I wanted to join the cool kids. After g...

I think vercels issue is that you're using a hobby account for commercial activity rather than the bandwidth.
If you look at their email it becomes apparent from the question on whether you sell your course.
Tbh I think that's pretty fair that they can't in fact give free resources to for profit enterprises.
There's a very real cost of maintaining a server, patching, securing, ensuring availability if the OS and of nginx, and your own time that is likely to stretch to a lot more in real terms than the cost of Netlify.
I've moved all my React frontends to Vercel a couple of months back. It's fast, stable and very easy to use.
100GB free tier is a very generous offer, so I do recommend it for all new projects.
Great article, a summary on the top would make it even better - I had to read through the whole soul searching story to find out Vercel has hidden bandwidth cap :)
I was just about to start using it but changed mind towards DO after reading this - thanks !
I'll always recommend use of CDN like netlify and vercel, since it easy to setup and it is guaranteed that the site will always be available in multiple copies. And each user/visitor will be served the one that is close where is requesting.
As always, unless use the alternatives hosting if you have a strong reason.
DigitalOcean is the best option, hosting all my sites there big and small! You can host multiple smaller projects on the same instance! And really this unclear prices on vercels and that email are reasons too never use that service, so sneaky and also feel insulting to boot!
You can host heavy sources externally (CDN) to avoid bloated bandwidth use.
What about cloudflare pages, they seem to have unlimited b/w in the free plan.
@zellwk I really liked your style of this article to get the best out of research article, inherent traffic for "learn JS" course and DO.
Good luck
If you have managing servers anyway, you can get cheaper servers than Digital Ocean.
Nexus Bytes (aff) is $6.40/month for 2GB RAM and 2TB traffic.
I will never use Vercel or Netify services for a regular website, you do it for Web App.
I have some regular WordPress websites on Hostinger for $5 a month, that's it.
