I'm Building AI Tool Atlas: 200+ AI Tools and an AI Agent

I’m Building AI Tool Atlas — Here’s Why

Hi DEV Community! 👋

I’m Alexander, an indie maker working on a project called AI Tool Atlas.

I want to share what I’m building, why I started, and where I hope to take it next.

The Problem: Too Many AI Tools, Not Enough Clarity

Every day, new AI products appear.

There are tools for writing, coding, design, video generation, marketing, automation, research, and almost everything else.

That’s exciting, but it also creates a problem.

How do you find the right tool without spending hours searching, opening dozens of tabs, and comparing products?

That question became the starting point for AI Tool Atlas.

What Is AI Tool Atlas?

AI Tool Atlas is a growing directory of 200+ AI tools, designed to help people discover and compare AI-powered products.

The idea is simple:

  • Make AI tools easier to discover.
  • Help visitors explore different categories.
  • Make comparing software more convenient.
  • Build a useful resource for creators, developers, entrepreneurs, and businesses.
  • Keep improving the experience based on actual user feedback.

The project is publicly accessible here:

It’s a real project in active development, not a finished product with every problem solved.

And that’s exactly why I’m sharing it now.

Going Beyond a Directory: AI Atlas Agent

One of the most interesting parts of the project is AI Atlas Agent.

My longer-term vision is to build more than a traditional directory.

Imagine visiting a website and describing your goal:

“I need an AI tool to create marketing videos.”

Or:

“What tools should I explore for automating a small business?”

Instead of manually browsing dozens of listings, you could interact with an AI assistant that helps you explore relevant options.

That’s the direction I’m working toward.

The agent is still evolving, and I don’t want to present unfinished capabilities as completed features.

Building as an Indie Maker

I’m working on this project independently, using AI-assisted development and accessible web technologies.

My focus includes the user experience, tool discovery, search visibility, infrastructure, and making the product useful to an international audience.

I’m learning as I go.

Some parts are exciting. Others are surprisingly difficult.

A small change can break a layout. A deployment can reveal an unexpected problem. Something that looks good on a desktop may behave differently on a phone.

And then there’s the challenge of getting real people to discover a new product.

Building something is one challenge.

Making it genuinely useful is another.

What I’m Working on Next

My current priorities are:

  1. Better discovery

Helping visitors find useful AI tools without unnecessary complexity.

  1. AI Atlas Agent

Continuing development of an assistant that can support AI tool exploration.

  1. A better mobile experience

Making the website convenient for people using smartphones.

  1. SEO and discoverability

Improving how people find the project through search engines.

  1. Community feedback

Learning what actual users find valuable, confusing, or missing.

I’m Looking for Feedback, Not Just Traffic

One reason I’m publishing this on DEV is that I’d rather hear useful criticism than pretend everything is perfect.

If you have a few minutes, I would genuinely appreciate you trying AI Tool Atlas.

Here are three things I’d love to know:

  1. Is the website easy to navigate?
  2. What would make an AI tools directory genuinely useful to you?
  3. What should I prioritize improving next?

I’m also open to conversations with indie makers, developers, AI product teams, and potential collaborators.

If you’re building something similar, I’d love to hear about your experience.

A Small Beginning

I don’t have impressive growth numbers to share.

I’m not claiming that AI Tool Atlas is going to change the industry overnight.

I’m simply building a product, learning along the way, and trying to make it better.

If you’re interested in AI tools, independent projects, or the process of building a product from the ground up, you’re welcome to follow the journey.
